🧡Santa Catarina Café🧡 — Restaurant in Funchal

After two weeks of good experiences around the island, this one was a let down. The cafe was about half full at around 2 in the afternoon. We waited 15 minutes until a waitress came. No menu was forthcoming. We asked for one but the reply was: are you looking for food or drinks? Because we just had a big group order and there won't be food for at least an hour. Now normally I would pack up and find another place that wants the business but we stayed and ordered just a couple of coffees and pastries. No way the waitress was going to come back to get us the bill so I went up to the counter to pay where I was ignored for a while then able to pay and we went on our way. The large table in question was a group of about 8. The food is toasts, sandwiches, salads and premade items like quiche, pastries etc. Maybe it was an off day for them but still disappointing that we couldn't even get a little toast or something or at least better, friendlier service. The location is very pleasant and peaceful. But the café is very limited regarding the menu options. They have no special allowance for gluten restrictions, vegetarian restrictions, and even snacks such as a waffle or crepes are not known, not to mention their tea / tisane options... My recommendation is: get yourselves out of your comfort zone, visit other successful cafes around line the Ritz or Le Petit Four, or yet the Loja do Chá! These are indeed...

Visted the city on a cruise and stopped off after a walk round town on the way back to the ship for a drink.

You get a great view and a lovely park and garden behind.

The draft beer was good, and the homemade lemonade and milkshake on a hot day hit the spot.

The server was polite and friendly and spoke good English.

The slices (wedges) of cake looked good.
