Dona Amelia Restaurant — Restaurant in Funchal

We dined here as a romantic last meal before travelling home. The food was fantastic, the beef skewer in particular was the best I'd had on the island so far.

If you want a table next to the window (which is highly recommended for the breeze) then pre-book. We did and had a fantastic evening! Portion sizes are generous but not too much. We were able to have starter main and dessert and my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

The service was second to none, waiters diligently stood by to top up wine and water. Always on hand for questions and their knowledge of the dishes on offer was excellent.

There were some poor reviews regarding the atmosphere. Let me clarify this place is not a nightclub, it's an extremely welcoming romantic restaurant in which you'll be able to enjoy a conversation with your partner without shouting over the top of music. The day we went it was completely booked up and we didn't feel like we had to shout to talk to eachother which was lovely!

Tonight I was eating with my family at the restaurant Dona Amélia to our complete satisfaction! I read in certain reviews that the food is tasteless, petty, overpriced - I can't confirm any of all this. I myself worked in the hotel industry & gastronomy and know the profession very well. I have hardly experienced a restaurant in Madeira that is in many ways such a model for good gastronomy. The food was excellent, of very good quality and in any case also in the quantity more than enough. In addition, everyone from the team is a very good host. It starts with the welcome, goes over the service during the evening until the farewell: Always accommodating, friendly and really attentive to the guests. What also gave me great pleasure as a professional: The team is well trained, extremely professional, expeditious and seems very well-established as a team. What could I say! After so many times in Funchal we finally made it here. Must say we re sad not having eaten here before. If you like a traditional french cuisine but also some delicious other dishes then go here!!! The foie gras is very generous, the linguine with prawns were made with a traditional bisque sauche (!) like you won‘t get it anywhere on the island. Let it accompany with a recommended wine.
