Sushi by Gavinas — Restaurant in Funchal

Really disappointed with our visit here. After reading all the wonderful reviews we booked here for dinner. As someone who has sushi A LOT back home in London, I can easily say i’ve had better sushi in my lunch break at work. I ordered the 10 piece “modern sushi” which I didn’t realise meant sushi with strawberry and pineapple in it?! Not a great combo. My mum ordered the Japanese noodles and they came drenched in an unknown sauce which made the noodles black. Very unappetising. The gyozas were a bit tasteless and the tempura vegetables were a bit random too - onions and mushrooms in the mix. This sushi restaurant is simply the best I've ever visited. I first discovered it in 2017, and since then, it has become a must-visit whenever I'm in Funchal. Not once has it disappointed me. The fish is always incredibly fresh, the portions are perfect, and the presentation is nothing short of exquisite. We had the pleasure of dining here on the reopening day after the renovations, and I must say, the ambiance is wonderfully inviting. The most amazing restaurant you can try on the whole Island. Me and my fiancee got there by complete chance and ended up having dinner there every night for the rest of our vacation. The waitress was absolutely incredible and helpful and I will always be thankful for the sushi advices. Astonishing food and atmosphere and the view is one of a kind!
