It is an average pub-type place and will be fine if that's all you're looking for.
From the outside, it seemed promising as a clean, proper English/Irish pub, which isn't really a thing here. The atmosphere seemed right and the menu seemed like you would expect.
It just fell... short. It ended up being yet another basic retired white tourist type place. And you can tell it's made for them since the food lacks flavour and spice. I ordered the curry, hoping to get a tasty flavourful dish. I even asked for it extra spicy and the server said yes, that's possible. Judging from the staff, and based on the fact the curry is listed on the menu as the named chef's speciality, I expected a good Indian-style dish.
It was underwhelming. Basically butter chicken for Brits. No spice. The server asked how it was, and said it had no heat at all. He explained that they can't make it spicy because of all the British tourists who complain about even the smallest amount of spice. Shame that they are shaping the palette of the Algarve. I understand that (I lived in England and know how sensitive they are), but when someone asks for spice, at least give them a little something.
The pork starter was mostly just overfried hunks of fat.
We had actually come here because we were craving a chicken Caesar salad, and it was on the menu. It was some type of chicken salad... but it wasn't a caesar. The chicken was strips of battered, fried chicken cutlets. Not grilled chicken breast. Strange. What I wouldn't give for a decent chicken caesar wrap in this town! I guess I'll keep searching.
The cappuccino was very thin and watery. But at least it was hot (not always guaranteed in Algarve lol).
Portions were on the small side. (Except for the rice. Lots of that!)
Everything was presented well with attention and care, and service was good and quick, but the quality just wasn't up to it. This pub is just another tourist place at the marina. If you're a retired person, or on holiday from England, Ireland or Germany, you'll probably be...
Read moreThis is the best place on the Marina in Lagos to stop for a drink. Most people cross the pedestrian bridge and assume the restaurants end at the 2 story highly visible structure just across the bridge. This is not the case. Move past the busy watering holes and come to the Marina Bar. All of the staff and very welcoming and always greet us, and our dog Boo, with a smile. The food is always fresh and often so straight out of the kitchen we have to allow it time to cool. Which is such a rare treat. The one secret to this “bar” is they also have AMAZING food. Kiran & Jonathan are more than cooks at the local bar. The larger entrees, beyond the standard pub fare (also delicious faves) are incredible. I HIGHLY recommend the chicken breast. I love Portuguese cuisine and the Mediterranean vibe of the food. Who knew a chicken dish would be top of my list. My husband loves the Curry Chicken. Many of the staff are Nepali and their spice combos and abilities are on point. So, “Deep”, Manita, Grace, Kiran &...
Read moreWe were staying near the Marina Bar and in the past had been delighted at its location for an after dinner drink before heading back to our hotel or a quick afternoon beer before heading into the old town.
This year however, the opening times seem a bit inconsistent. We presented at both 23:30 one night and 21:30 the second night. On both occasions the doors were open and it appeared that customers were inside. On both visits we have been advised that the bar is closed.
On entering at only 21:30, some staff were sitting at a table and advised that they were closed. We asked when they close as the location is very handy and we would maybe return the next day (a third time!), however we were not really given an answer.
A bit disappointing, I understand not taking walk in customers close to closing time, but I feel that half an hour is at least enough for a quick drink (going by the google maps opening hours)? It is a shame that the bar seems to close so early, as other bars across the Marina appear to...
