Finally, a second restaurant to add to the list of "Actually Half-Decent Asian Food in Lagos". This list is small, as in 2 total places. That's the sad state of authentic Asian food in the town (and the Algarve, in general).
Eat Thai is not the best Thai food, nor the most authentic, but it's the best that we've had in the Algarve so far. That's not actually saying a lot considering the dire situation down here, but at least there is a glimmer of hope that things are changing for the better! Normally, a place like this would get 2 or 3 stars from me, but by the Algarve standards, it's actually good. And I had a good time, so why not?
The spot is new, and lots of care has been put into the feel of it. The bed pillows were a bit strange, but oh well. It gets super busy at lunch so reservations are a good idea if you know in advance. Staff are all nice, most are East Asian.
Usually, at new Thai restaurants, I order my go-tos, but I decided to try a different method here. I wish now I had stuck to my usual.
We ordered the Gai Hor Bai Phai (chicken in banana leaves), Moo Krob (cripsy pork belly), one of the prawn things, Goong Sam Rod (I don't eat prawns like that so I'm not sure which it was), and Pad Kra Pao Moo (mince pork).
The chicken in banana leaves were delicious and expertly cooked. It's unfortunate that it wasn't in the authentic pandan leaves however. It lost all the taste it should gain from pandan. Crisp pork belly was fine. Nothing exciting either way. I can't comment on the prawns, but I was told "it was okay but very strange presentation which made it a bit awkward to eat". I did notice they clean their prawns which is awesome to see. Pad Kra Pao is one of my fav dishes (aka holy basil chicken/pork). This one was the weakest of the meal. There was barely any heat/chilli, no basil at all, and no fried egg. And it was really watery, like swimming in liquid. It should be drier and more flavourful. Very disappointing. Nothing like any holy basil dish I've ever had. It felt very "Thai but for Europeans".
The reason this place gets points over many other so-called Asian joints is that they offer less well-known dishes, and attempt to do them closer to authentic than everywhere else. Some of the flavours work. It's nowhere close to the best Thai food I've ever had, but for the Algarve, it's the...
Read moreDisappointing, to be honest. I live nearby and when I saw this restaurant open I was pleased as having spent half my life in Asia I very much enjoy Thai food. We pre-booked a table outside but when we arrived there were three American students sat at the next table who were very loud and unruly. So we moved inside and started looking through the menu. A waiter then showed a single guy in and placed him on the table next to us, even though there were plenty more tables available so we felt as though he was listening in to our conversation, which was creepy. We ordered chicken satays and spring rolls but when the satays came out as strips of chicken we asked what it was. The waiter said they don't use skewers... The taste was so so. The spring rolls were only OK and the sauces for both dishes were bland. Then came the massaman curry and pad Thai. The meat in the curry was chewy and fatty but it tasted reasonable. I have no idea what the pad Thai was supposed to taste like but what ever it was it was pretty boring, such that after a small taste I left the rest to my wife, who struggled to eat it. We asked for the bill and the waiter came with the payment machine which showed the 60+ euro fee and then a whole list of tip options that we might want to bestow. I clicked the bottom one - no tip, because it didn't deserve one. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes or went on the wrong night, who knows? I was hoping this was going to be a regular eatery but will not be going back. There are so many more fantastic options in Lagos that I'm...
