Águas Livres — Restaurant in Lisbon

We enjoyed lunch here before going to the Klimt Monet immersive art experience across the street. We arrived right at 12h30 and were the first ones in. The restaurant’s decor is both charming and calming. The waiter was attentive but not intrusive. And while not a fancy gourmet eatery you cannot go wrong with the solid, filling traditional Portuguese food here. We had the pataniscas (four large delicious cod fritters) and the duck rice (among the best I’ve had in Portugal and I’ve sampled this dish quite often). We had the requisite vegetable soup (very good) and had a very large side of what we Puerto Ricans would consider a sancocho - a creamy white rice and pinto beans dish served in a ceramic pot steaming hot - it was delicious. Portions are, while not super sized as they tend to be in the U.S., quite filling. And for those dinging this place for charging you for “starters” like bread, butter, olives, cheese that are brought to your table shortly after you are seated, please do some homework before you arrive here. That is customary throughout Portugal as well as in several other countries throughout Europe. We had hoped to try their desserts but were too sated. We will return. While not in the city center, you should definitely consider this place if you’re going to an event at the Reservatório da Mãe de Água next door....

This isn’t a gourmet place – it’s more about simple, hearty Portuguese food, and overall it felt pleasant. The soup was a good starter, and the duck rice was simple but tasty, with such a big portion that I couldn’t finish it.

Bringing bread, olives and butter to the table right away was expected – in my experience, that’s common in Southern Europe. It only cost €1.50 and was listed at the start of the menu. Personally, I like this custom and I know to say no if I don’t want it.

What I didn’t like was that they also brought a plate of cheese without asking, saying nothing about it. It seemed like it came with the bread and olives, but when I asked, it turned out the cheese was charged separately. Conheço este restaurante há cerca de 10 anos e a minha visita mais recente infelizmente obriga-me a escrever este comentário. Guardava boa memória das minhas visitas anteriores de uma casa onde a comida sempre primou pela qualidade e um serviço acolhedor. Encaminhei um grupo de 13 pessoas que estava sob a minha responsabilidade para que pudessem conhecer aquilo que eu considerava ser um bom exemplar da comida e restauração portuguesa, mas com muita pena nossa fomos muito mal tratados pelo gerente da casa desde os primeiros minutos em que entrámos no restaurante. O ambiente da casa foi muito hostil do princípio ao fim (os próprios empregados de mesa pareciam estar a ser vítimas de mau-trato e bullying pelo que acredito ser o gerente da casa), uma agressividade inexplicável por parte de quem devia zelar pelo bem receber e bem estar dos seus clientes e dos seus funcionários. Já tive situações de antipatia em outros restaurantes ao longo da vida, nada que merecesse uma exposição pública de mau trato. Mas aquilo que ontem recebemos deste restaurante pelo qual guardava carinho e quis partilhar com outras pessoas que nada mais queriam do que ter uma experiência agradável com boa comida, foi triste demais para ficar esquecido. Em duas conversas com o gerente, não houve qualquer interesse em melhorar o ambiente ou zelar pelo bem estar dos seus clientes. Não sou de fazer cruzes a restaurantes ou comentar sobre experiências negativas, mas com muita pena minha não voltarei a visitar ou recomendar esta casa por culpa da atitude de alguém que não parece ter qualquer interesse de futuro no seu negócio. Fazer sentir os clientes indesejados e ainda cobrar itens indevidamente no momento da conta são indícios de total desrespeito pelo ofício. Podia ter sido um dia mau ou um caso isolado, mas a atitude foi tão negativa e transversal a todos os clientes que sinto que esta casa vai cair vertiginosamente em relação ao que outrora...
