My Airbnb was right across from Varina, and as soon as I stepped outside, I was warmly greeted by Rui, who was setting up the patio for dinner. From our first conversation, he was kind and welcoming — a true gentleman. He shared some of the restaurant’s history with us and even gave us a quick tour inside. Fun fact: President Carter once dined here! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the food felt like something you’d enjoy at home — true comfort cuisine. We ordered the goat cheese with jam, tempura, cod rice, and Portuguese ham, along with the orange sangria. Everything was delicious! Just a heads-up: the portions are generous, so it’s best to order lightly or come with a group to share. What truly made the evening unforgettable was our waiter, Rui. He was incredibly thoughtful, plating each dish for us and speaking about the food with such genuine passion. His kindness and attentiveness stood out — he’s a rare gem in the hospitality world. This experience will stay with us. Thank you, Varina team!

A very typical and quaint restaurant… great Portuguese food and amazing athmosphere… This place is full of history. If you can, take the time to see the newspaper clips and writings from famous Portuguese (and non Portuguese) people. Even President Jimmy Carter (USA) was here when he visited Portugal (1977). The wine is great, the food is amazing… Bacalhau à Varina, Pataniscas, Migas… All of them will leave you wanting more 😃 Book your table because it does get busy. Thank you Varina 💙 I shall be back 😃

Horrible experience: 1) We ordered a starter, we got another one. We got some ham paste with cheese . Not too bad, but not what we asked 2) Only 2 out of 6 main fish dishes were available... Not that big of a deal, but 3) The main courses were slightly warm and full of oil. Clearly they were not freshly cooked and some day old. 4) The receipt... Unreadable Maybe if you are a local you get a better treatment

Me ne accorgo dopo e gli chiedo, a quel punto parecchio seccata, spiegazioni.

The worst experience in Lisbon! He gave us two different menus (one in Portuguese and one in English). The Portuguese had different and lower prices compared to the English one and of course he told us that the Portuguese menu was wrong. The fish was horrible and so was the service. More than an hour to get our food. The codfish had an horrible smell and taste, definitely not a fresh fish. Same for the sea bass. When it was time to pay, he charged for 3 dishes and house wine (without taking into account the prices on the menu) and it was 44,50€. When he charged the card, he put €49,50!!!!!!!!!! Saying that it was the water that he didn’t included!!!!!!! We tried to stop the transaction but he immediately put the card on the machine without our consent and he charged us more!!! The worst experience ever. DON’T COME TO THIS...
