During my recent visit to Porto, Portugal, I had the pleasure of dining at O Buraco Restaurant, and I must say, it was a delightful experience that exceeded my expectations. Tucked away on a quaint street in the heart of the city, O Buraco truly lives up to its name as a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The cozy interior, with its rustic decor and dim lighting, created a charming ambiance that instantly made me feel at home. The friendly staff members were attentive, knowledgeable, and made me feel welcomed throughout my entire visit.

The menu at O Buraco offers a range of traditional Portuguese dishes with a modern twist. The chef's dedication to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients was evident in every dish that was served. The flavors were rich, vibrant, and beautifully presented. I particularly enjoyed the Bacalhau à Brás, a traditional codfish dish with scrambled eggs and crispy shoestring potatoes. The combination of textures and flavors was simply exquisite.

The wine selection at O Buraco was impressive, showcasing a variety of Portuguese wines that complemented the dishes perfectly. The staff was more than happy to provide recommendations based on my preferences, and their expertise added an extra layer of enjoyment to the dining experience.

One aspect that stood out to me was the attention to detail. Each dish was meticulously prepared and plated with care, demonstrating the chef's passion for culinary artistry. The portion sizes were generous, ensuring that I left the restaurant feeling satisfied and content.

The only reason I didn't give O Buraco a perfect five-star rating is because the restaurant's popularity can make it quite crowded during peak hours. However, this minor inconvenience did not detract from the overall experience.

In conclusion, O Buraco Restaurant in Porto is a hidden gem that I highly recommend to anyone seeking an authentic Portuguese dining experience. From the warm and inviting ambiance to the delicious and artfully crafted dishes, every aspect of the restaurant exudes excellence. Whether you're a local or a visitor, O Buraco is a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts looking to indulge in the flavors...

20 October 2023 Update: We were back in Porto for a couple of weeks and went back to O Buraco 3 times for lunch. We ordered a bunch of different daily specials, which all run under €10. We tried Salad Mista, Omelet, and Beef O Buraco, Porc Chops, Chicken Curry and several other specials. A 1/4 crafe of white or red house wine runs for €2.50.

All of our meals were delicious. The service has always been attentive and prompt. The entire lunch for two runs about €25, which is very reasonable. This is a family restaurant and not a fancy one and the prices reflect that.

2019 Review: This restaurant was suggested by one of the local business friends. It is definitely a favorite of the locals. We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, and there was a line out the door. So, we went back on Monday at about 12:30 and were lucky to get a table right away.

There are about 12 tables on the main floor and another 10 on the floor below. By the time we left the restaurant at 1:30, there were people waiting to get in. As we looked around, many of the other patrons were local folks.

We ordered Monday's special, Curry Chicken, which came with rice. It was more like a stew served in a casserole with slices of bread on top to soak in the sauce. Portions are not big, but for 7€ per person, it's definitely worth it..

As you can imagine, the place is compact and not much space between the tables, but then that's what you expect from a restaurant like this.

The service was prompt and friendly. The menu is also available on English and staff speak...

O Buraco in Porto is the definition of a hidden gem. At first glance, it might not catch your eye—the place is simple, unassuming, and definitely not trying to impress with fancy decor or presentation. The food doesn’t arrive looking like it belongs in a gourmet magazine either. But once you take that first bite, all of that goes out the window.

The flavors are absolutely phenomenal. Every dish we tried tasted like something lovingly made in a Portuguese grandma’s kitchen—rich, comforting, and full of soul. This is true home-style cooking at its best. You can tell they care about quality ingredients and traditional flavors, and it really shines through in every bite.

The beverages were equally impressive—great selection, and clearly chosen with the same care as the food. And let’s talk about the dessert… hands down one of the best I’ve had in Portugal. It was the kind of sweet treat that makes you stop mid-bite just to savor it.

On top of all that, the pricing is extremely fair. Compared to other restaurants that look fancier but don’t deliver nearly the same level of flavor, O Buraco comes in about 15-20% cheaper. It’s an amazing value for the quality you’re getting.

This place isn’t about flash—it’s about heart, flavor, and authenticity. If you're in Porto and want a truly memorable, delicious meal that feels like home, definitely make a stop here. You...

Our highest recommendation. Not understandable that some called this amazing place a „tourist trap“. The opposite is true: Courteous service, excellent food and large portions at prices that that can't be beat. We paid a total of 41€ for two of us with appetizers, 2x fish, dessert & espresso and a bottle of Vinho Verde & water. Unbeatable value for money! Menu trilingual (Portuguese, English, French), once a week (Mondays) there's grilled octopus (was unfortunately already sold out). The first disappointment was compensated by a fantastic grilled fish and super delicious homemade Mousse au Chocolat and the portion „Queijo da Serra“ (delicious Portuguese Cheese) was simply unbelievably large... The atmosphere in the admittedly somewhat rustic restaurant (which is absolutely coherent here!) was pleasant, very many Portuguese (some of them obviously regulars) prove that "locals" also like to eat here. The staff speaks perfect English & is courteous (even to tourists!). Overall, quite small guest room. Mirrors make it look significantly larger, yet a few guests also had to be put off / sent away. Once again: highly recommended! We will come back again soon, because we liked it so well and it tasted really fantastic! But unfortunately we could not try it all (the whole menu).

This is the first place we went to eat in Porto, it was recommended to us by one of the locals. From the outside the resturant doesn't look like much and you could easily walk straight past it, but it is a little gem. The resturant was busy and buzzing. The staff were kind and gave us some bread while we looked over the menu. My girlfriend had grilled seabass with tomato rice and I had the Portuguese sausage with rice and chips. The meal was excellent and was exactly the kind of homemade local dish I wanted to try. I thoroughly enjoyed it and my girlfriend's food was really nice too. For dessert I had chocolate pudding and she had strawberries and cream, both were really fresh and just right in size. All of the food was brought out quite fast and was great quality, and the most impressive part was it was not expensive at all! This was honestly one of the most enjoyable meals I had whilst in Porto and I can't reccomend it enough!
