Sometimes, the most beautiful moments in life happen completely by accident…
We walked into Arpezo Snack Bar without any plans — just to ask a quick question, because right next door is the office where we had just gotten married. It was one of the happiest days of our lives already… and then Fried turned it into something truly unforgettable. ❤️
When he heard our story, this kindest, warmest, most wonderful person in the world didn’t hesitate for a second. With the biggest smile, he spontaneously opened a bottle of the most delicious white wine, poured us each a glass, and then said: “This entire bottle is my gift to you — to celebrate your love.”
We were left speechless. 🥹 Moments like this remind you that there is so much kindness and beauty in the world.
Arpezo Snack Bar isn’t just a place to eat or drink. It’s a place full of heart, warmth, and magic. We will remember this moment forever, and every time we think of Madeira, we will think of Fried and this beautiful gesture.
If you are ever nearby — you must visit. Not just for the amazing wine and atmosphere, but to meet people who make the world a better place simply by being in it.

Read moreWhat a great little place. Reading the other reviews, there seems to be a habit of discovering this place on the last day of your visit. Me too. Alas. I'm so impressed, I couldn't even wait until the end of my meal to post this review. Vegetarian options are few, and mostly pasta or omelettes, in Santa Cruz. This blew my mind. Original, Portuguese food, recommended by the very helpful waitress (/owner?) was DELICIOUS and very filling. The Poncha was really nice and they didn't skimp on the alcohol, either. Had 2. Yummy. Cheap food, nice staff, strong drinks, good atmospheric music and (as an example of how perfect this place is) clean and working toilets too. Can't recommend it enough!
Luckily, I have 1 more day left, so I'll be back tomorrow.
Update: had Cachapas the first day and Arepa the second day. Both delicious and filling. Again, highly...
Read moreA hidden gem! The restaurant is owned and operated by a lovely family that care about serving fresh and delicious food. Believe me, you’ll want to go back so plan accordingly!
We stopped by on our way to our rental house after a late flight and despite that they were getting ready to close, they agreed to prepare a takeaway order for us 💕
In our two visits, one for takeaway and one for lunch at the restaurant, we tried quite a few of their foods (arepas, cachapa, empanada, arepitas) and all of them were freshly cooked, savoury and very satisfying! If you still have room for dessert, their nutella bites (tequenos de nutella) are to die for 😋
Highly recommend if you’re looking for something quick to eat that’s not gonna break the bank (pretty cheap) but that’s going to leave feeling pretty full and happy with...
