Normally I deliberately refrain from writing reviews and ratings of this kind because they always reflect the own preferences and don't give me a clear picture. In this case, however, I am forced to write something because the reviews I can read here do not correspond at all to the facts that can be found on site. The service is very lacklustre and that already in the early afternoon (2pm!!!) In a restaurant in a very touristy location and close to Funchal, I can assume that the waitress can at least understand a little English and knows the answers to my questions. That is not the case here. The waitress can say yes or no and that's the end of it. When asked how one or other product is prepared, if it says According to type of... I get no explanation. It's simply subterranean - the 80-year-old grandpa at the farmers' market in Santo Antonio da Serra can speak more English!!! I had the highly praised spicy prawns as a starter. I was looking forward to prawns, which I got completely on the plate and a spicy sauce that transported me to another galaxy and what do I get, already peeled like from the freezer bag at home and a bland tomato sauce with lovelessly decorated blackened olives. The price of €18 is exorbitant for this stuff! For my main course, I had the still highly praised octopus arms, house style, and I was even more disappointed than with the prawns. Served lukewarm and loveless with overcooked pieces of sweet potato, they were absolutely soft and had no bite! The flavour was also so bland! An absolute disappointment! It was only surpassed by my family's sandwiches which smelt of old fat and caused stomach ache and vomiting, which I really don't understand any more!!! I STRONGLY advise against this restaurant and I haven't even described the conditions of the toilets and the smell there.... The prices are a disgrace for this quality of food !!!!

What a nice experience! Everything was awesome, the beer temperature, the pregos, the codfish, but the best thing were the employees! They were all friendly and helpful and always making sure if everything was ok. As the food was taking a bit to arrive, we asked the waiter how long would it take. He just smiled and said he’d get something for us. After 2 minutes, he arrived offering two samples: one of the regional picado and one of the regional fried corn, which both were pretty good, and free! This employee was such a nice guy, we had some good laughs with him! The entries were quite good! We had the normal bolo do caco and a sausage, cheese and olives tapa, which was the best tapa we had on the island! As for main dishes, the pregos were delicious, and the fries were even better! The bacalhau was lovely too! The drinks were in a good temperature, and it’s good to mention that they had Super Bock, as most of the places on the island only serve Coral, the regional root beer. Overall it was the best we ate in the island, great atmosphere, and also a good price-quality ratio! Definitely check this out!

I had a great experience at “Taberna do Petisco”! The food was delicious, and each dish was bursting with flavor. We especially enjoyed the “Prego no prato” more than the “Polvo à Taberna”. The staff’s friendliness and warmth made us feel at home, creating a cozy and enjoyable atmosphere. The quality of service was exceptional; they were attentive to all our needs, ensuring a memorable gastronomic experience. We couldn’t have found a better place to indulge in delightful flavors and exceptional hospitality. We highly recommend “Taberna do Petisco” to anyone seeking a fantastic gastronomic experience on the island of Madeira (Santa Cruz) 🍽️😊 I have a constructive criticism: the lights in the women’s wc are automatic, but they only work when we enter. After that, they turn off, and we are completely in the dark! No matter how much we move to try to turn them back on, it doesn’t work…

And suddenly in the pearl of the Atlantic, you bump with a gastronomic pearl! A well-built menu with a mix of traditional dishes and recipes of the chef, please anyone who has the good luck of sitting in this restaurant, appreciated by locals and tourists alike. The plates are prepared with care and expertise and the "being at the house of friends that really know how to cook" feeling surrounds us. The friendlyness of the owner and its staff is the cherry on top of the cake. A gastronomic reference of Santa Cruz and I dare to say of Madeira. Mandatory visit.
