Sintra has a lot of places that feel touristy and the menu boards look the same. Tira Tapas is not like that.
A short walk from Jardin Hotel, the little row here has Tapas places that seem to be open when it suits them, but there is always one open for dinner- and everyone who was lucky enough to go clearly saw it as a highlight of their Sintra trip. It's small, and full of people speaking Portuguese. A welcome sound after the touristy bustle of the central town.
I had Grandma's Duck Rice, which was really rich and had lovely sausage and a generous portion of duck.
Service was wonderful - though it comes at its own pace. The place has personality and a buzz that is rustic and just a little bit formal. I'd only wish to dress a little nice than a T-shirt, but they made me feel welcome as I was.
In Portugal people often tell you not to accept the added cost for the table additions, but I highly recommend the Olives. I don't like olives. Or I didn't. Theirs...

Honestly this was the best food we ate in Portugal and even most of Europe, we still think about it to this day. Read moreWe spent a lovely evening here, both the food and service were great. A real surprise was the wine suggested by the owner, an alto pina reserva 2020. It was so good I've ordered a couple of bottles since we returned. The food was great, we tried sausage dipped in honey then poppy seeds. I had the braised pork cheeks, which was a large portion, slow cooked and so tender. We also had a salt cod and potatoes dish.
