Another of probably the 2 most popular kafana in the area (Skadarlija, Belgrade), along with Tri Sesira (3 Hats- see my other review), Dva Jelena (2 Stags) has been here for ages & serves great, traditional Serbian food/ drink. Came here for an outdoor lunch on a mild January afternoon (15C/ 55F), after finding it fully booked both nights prior (DEFINITELY call ahead or visit for a reservation). Like Tri Sesira, English is spoken & an English menu is available. I had the traditional Serbian cheese pie (think Spanakopita, minus the spinach), grilled salmon (losas) with steamed broccoli, carrots & cauliflower, latte w/ a double shot of espresso, sparkling water, & 2 shots of medovaca (Serbian plum brandy mixed w/ honey to soften & sweeten it…strong stuff!). Finished with the sour cherry pie The food was good (sour cherry pie tasted a bit old, but wasn’t bad), service was friendly & in English, if a bit slow. Setting was very nice, eating on the outdoor terrace on a pretty day. Prices are high by Serbian standards (about 3200 dinar or $32 USD for my meal above in Jan 2022), but still very good for western travelers or others w/ stronger currencies. A good choice to visit if you’re in the bustling, lively, heavily touristed former “artist colony” of Skadarlija in Belgrade/ Beograd (White City) Serbia.

To echo another review on here, I'm usually wary of these places in touristy areas due to them often being pretentious. This is certainly not the case with this restaurant and I cannot praise them enough. Lovely warm welcome on arrival, huge menu of traditional foods, salads, grills, fish etc. Waiter explained some of the dishes as we were uncertain about some items. As we ordered our recommended half portion as he explained full portion was to share. He wasn't wrong! My turkey with pasta was huge and I could have shared it easily, god knows how big the full portion is. It was strips of pasta with fried turkey in a rich sauce and was really tasty and very filling. There was a live band playing at table sides which just added to the already lively atmosphere. Great friendly service, really tasty food, large portions and very reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

Most important: SORT BY LOWEST REVIEWS and read them, before making the wrong decision to visit this place, as they paint the real image of this place. It is a restaurant where racism is endorsed and you will be ripped off your money with all those “additional fees”. Wish I had read the reviews before deciding to come here. I would give this restaurant -10 stars if I could due to their appalling treatment of customers, particularly by the older man, who I assume is their manager. Upon entering, we were completely ignored by the hostesses, who were preoccupied with some notebooks, despite us standing directly in front of them. We had to speak first just to get their attention and ask for a table for two. Then, this so-called manager approached and shouted in Serbian that we needed to leave by 18:00 due to a reservation for a large group. That wasn’t a problem since we arrived at 16:00, but what was infuriating was that he turned to the hostesses and asked if either of them had told us that, while we were standing right there as if we were invisible. He then rudely barked if we understood Serbian, which was completely unprofessional. I responded in my own language, which is not Serbian, and made it clear that I understood everything, and he clearly understood as well. Once seated, this manager continued to work in our section, and he never stopped yelling. Apparently, this is how he communicates. He made crude jokes and awful comments about guests that were there, that no 50-year-old man should make, coming across as an uncultured person dragged off the street to run a shift. Foreign guests were fortunate not to understand his words. He is a rude, unrefined, unprofessional joke of a manager. While the drinks and salads were served promptly, I waited 50 minutes for a simple hamburger patty (pleskavica), which arrived after we had already finished our salads. They also brought bread (lepinja) that we didn’t order and charged us for it. The only positives were the delicious food and excellent homemade wine. Our waiter, an older man with white hair, was very attentive and apologized, explaining that the meat was delayed due to a large number of guests. Despite the quality of the food, I do not recommend this place. If you don’t want to be treated like trash or have your experience ruined by a foul-mouthed manager, take your money elsewhere.

Food and atmosphere were wonderful, but the service was terrible. The servers are biased towards tourists and visitors in fancy evening clothes. If you are an ex-pat who speaks the language perfectly and comes to the restaurant with causal clothing after the whole day spent exploring the city, expect barely adequate service. In fact, I was shocked by a marked lack of hospitality. It took forever to get seated and though the preferred table by the balcony fence was empty my friend and I were forced to sit close to the restaurant instead. It also took forever to get the attention of the server. The server did not know what kind of salad was in the mixed green salad dish and was not forthcoming about the ingredients of other dishes. This is a concern for people with food allergies. The server also did not bother to check on us and see if we needed additional service. If the service was better I would have given this place five stars. I am a generous tipper, but this time I barely left 5% (my friend wanted me to leave nothing). Therefore, if you really wish to visit the restaurant and enjoy its excellent food, make sure you wear fancy clothes and/or speak in a foreign language to receive preferential treatment. Otherwise, try a different restaurant. There are many in the area. Also be prepared to ingest a lot of cigarette smoke with your meal.

We dined at Dva jelena on our last night in Belgrade, at the suggestion of our hotel. The restaurant was full, so we said we would dine on the outdoor patio, which to the locals it was too cold, but we were warm after a twenty minute walk. Our waiter, Nikolas, let us know that he had a table for us inside, which was welcomed, not because of the cold, but because of the lively atmosphere and Serbian music we were hoping to experience. We ordered the lamb and a pork dish, along with a traditional tomato, cucumber and cheese salad that was delicious. Everything was so delicious. The garlic bread that came to our table was amazing. Thank you for sending us back to Wisconsin with a wonderful Serbian meal, coupled with incredible hospitality. We enjoyed a bottle of wine with our meal and the bill came to just over $100 US.
