Hmmm. Let me start this honest review of Honest Chocolate Cafe⦠It was not at all what I expected. We entered around 17:00 for coffee and a chocolate treat. Having never been there before we stood waiting to be seated until we asked and were told itās first come, first serve and we needed to look around to find seats. It was packed but, we found a table with three seats in the courtyard area (itās quite picturesque) and sat down. After some time we realised we needed to go up to the counter to place our order. There were no menus to view at our table so we had to take turns going up to the counter to avoid losing our table. There were many things on the menu which were not available but, my son had the banana bread volcano and a chocolate shake; I had the chocolate cake and decaf flat white and; my husband tried the cheesecake and flat white. The coffee was great and my husband loved the cheesecake (even though the slice was tiny) but, my son and I found the cake and volcano to be good but, not the best. We had just received our order (service is quite quick) when a man and his friend positioned themselves next to our table and started smoking right over my sonās head. Iām pregnant and my son is ten years old so, I found this very rude and inconsiderate. My husband got up to look for seats inside and luckily there was a small table which could accommodate three. We proceeded to move our drinks and cakes inside but, we were a lot more cramped at the new table and it was very stuffy indoors. We wonāt be returning as itās not really a family friendly cafe and the set-up was not to my...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy son is a chocolate-lover!!! So when he heard about hot chocolate and chocolate cake... he wanted to go!!! We specially picked the coldest day in CT to enjoy this chocolate cafe. When you walk into the shop, you can smell the chocolate aroma in the room. Their chocolate and cake displays are set up so nicely, and I love their menu on the wall. Everything is chocolate and more chocolate.
We ordered their hot chocolate (as mentioned, it was a coldish day) and a double dark chocolate cake. My son ate all the cake without sharing, and I drank the hot chocolate. They used real unsweetened chocolate to make the hot chocolate, so it wasn't to my son's taste. I did add some sugar, but it was still very strong chocolate taste.
My only regret was not trying more chocolate options like their brownies or the chocolate bunny chow. Definitely next time and buying their chocolate slabs. It is a bit pricey, but you can't argue because they do use good quality chocolate to make their drinks and confectioneries.
I gave them a 4-star, but not because it was not good. Their cake was tasty (not too sweet, not too heavy, or too rich). The sponge was less moist, and the hot chocolate was just not creamy or warm enough for me. They brought the food and took the order correctly but there was not much service (you order, they bring and that is it.) And the place is cozy and they got that 'alley look and feel to the place'... you just want people to sit longer and use the space more to have that vibe...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI visited Honest Chocolate Cafe recently with high expectations of chocolaty bliss. Having read a lot of reviews, some being on the negative side, I still forged ahead and visited because, hey, I am a chocoholic and I will visit any establishment with the word chocolate in its name, honest or not. I ordered the famed banana bread bunny chow that most people were raving about. What I expected and what I got were worlds apart. The banana bread was dense and not very sweet. Definitely not as light as some mentioned. My ice-cream was ok but not great either. I did however like the chocolate ganache. If I went back I'd try something different. My daughter had a dairy-free iced milk,a brownie and vanilla ice-cream and she wasn't impressed with the iced milk and ice-cream. She said the ice-cream wasn't as smooth and the iced milk still had icicles in it and spoiled the texture of the drink. As a place that prides itself on offering dairy-free alternates they should significantly up their game on that front. People, like my daughter, who are lactose-intolerant want to be to able enjoy desserts/drinks with the same taste and texture as regular ones.To justify all the adoration HCC should read these reviews ( I hope they do) and do their best to tweak the recipes to make it more enjoyable to more people. They have a good concept and their heart's in the right place but just not some of...
