This is a very honest review from someone who was here for their honeymoon and trying to have an amazing experience in their first time in Cape Town. Our reservation was at 7PM and if you look at our bill, the entire meal took a staggering 4 hours for a mere 8 courses. Our first 3 courses came in the first hour and the last 5 took 3 hours to complete. There were over 30 min between courses with no acknowledgment that they were running behind. Have plans after? You better cancel them! When we arrived our server welcomed us and congratulated us for our honeymoon and swiftly offered us a glass of champagne, no menu or price shown. So nice we thought and accepted what we thought was a complimentary glass, just to find out on our bill that it was not free and they just charged us for it. (See image of the bill) Now we can obviously afford $20 for champagne but don’t offer or make it seem like you were welcoming us. The concept of the food is great, chef was inspired on his visit to Japan and wanted to bring back the Japanese influence using native South African ingredients. This is why we decided to come eat and experience his interpretation. However, when eating the food, it is very clear that either the chef only visited Japan without learning to how make the food properly or it is now executed by a team that never been to Japan or understand the nuances of Japanese cuisine. The food is ok, nothing will blow your mind and familiar items are executed poorly. If you have been to Japan or eaten amazing Japanese food, you will feel the food is flat. I do very much appreciate all of the local ingredients being used. There is a clear point of view for this concept but the execution is what’s lacking. Service in the main room was handled by only 2 waiters for around 15-20 tables. You can imagine the lack of attention and I already mentioned the pace of the food and how slow it was. There didn’t seem to be any sense of urgency from the kitchen or wait staff even when it was clear that many tables have been waiting between courses for more than 30 minutes. @50best I do not know how this restaurant can even crack the top 200 list. You either have to have inventive food, impeccable service, or usually a combination of both. I know it fell from rank 36 to now rank 60 but the experience that was just had when the restaurant knew we were here for a special occasion is unreasonable. I would not care that service is a bit slower today, or that the food was not amazing, but when you have been waiting for hours eating a lackluster meal and then the bill comes and they charge you for the champagne they made sound like was comped, it leaves you with a terrible taste in your mouth as you pay and leave. Not to mention they add a mandatory 12.5% gratuity that they do not deserve. If you’re looking for fine dining in Cape Town, go somewhere else. You will be happy you did. Save your time and your money.

This was a really late review. When we visited in June 2023, Fyn was ranked World's #75 Best Restaurant. We were only able to book for lunch session at that time for myself, my wife and our two teenager boys. The experience were exceptional from reservation to the part when they send us off after our meal. My take here: 1) Reservation: Did this online. Seacrhed via google map, clicked the link and the booking process was straightforward 2) Restaurant: Reception was fantactic. We unknowingly parked our rented car quite a walking distance away. Upon arrival, was informed by the reception at the grouynd floor that they provide valet services as well. We we warmly welcomed and whisked away to a lift to the dining floor. Restaurant is modern, spacious and I loved the open-ness of the space with natural lighting 3) Special request: This part was really exceptional - my wife's request of no carb and sweet desserts were quickly accepted - non-alcoholic pairing for our boys were quickly arranged - and my request for a complete SA wine pairing were sorted out :) 4) Food: All of us took the lunch menu with the Kalahari beef fillet as our mains except for my wife who took Pecastarian Lunch Menu with Roast Kingklip as her main. I thought the food were somwhere in between 4.0 - 4.5. Love the combination of local herbs and spices. All of us enjoyed the Cape Fish temaki where we get to construct our own handrolls, but flavor wise; we are very familiar with the much use Japanese techniques here - so we might be too familliar with the flavor profiles. I love the fact all the ingredients were sourced locally depending on season and availability. Each dish were added with the unique touch of SA flavors and herbs that can be found at Fynbos. Wines that were paired with my dishes were also exceptional and different from the usual conventional old world fine wines. Would love to return next time and experience the full dinner course

Top class Japanese inspired tasting menu This morning when I woke up I had no idea what I was having for dinner tonight, with my wife’s cooking I rarely do. When I got to the office though, I remembered that my daughter was sleeping at her school tonight, outside on cardboard boxes (seriously). Safe in the knowledge that she was set to learn valuable lessons about the less fortunate, I decided that without the burden of the third wheel, my wife and I could have a decent peaceful dinner. Oh glory, what a pleasure walking in and instantly knowing you are in safe warm hands. I don’t have to tell you that the food and service is great, you just know you’re not at McDonald’s. The kitchen is completely open and we chose to sit at the kitchen counter to have an up close and personal view of the ‘wekes’. You can imagine my disappointment when instead of seeing slaves whipped and screaming and sweating into the food, I witnessed boring calm organization! You just can’t find good kitchen drama like you see on one of Gordon Ramsey’s shows. The food is described as Japanese, but with a twist. There are some obvious SA flavors incorporated which provide some much needed love for our country (yay... go Proteas!) And like paying tax, the bill arrives and you know that tomorrow is another day at the office where the big wheel turns, but at least you will have the blissful memory that your own sweat and screams are all for the purpose of a joyous night out on the town. — eating dinner with Haley Conolly van Aswegen at FYN Restaurant.

Visit in May 2024 South Africa, Cape Town. Fyn caught my eye due to its positive reviews, and I have a particular fondness for Asian-European culinary fusions. The restaurant itself has an unusual design, resembling a barn with dark, muted colours and high ceilings – very charming. We were welcomed with genuine warmth. Food: The restaurant operates with a pre-set degustation menu, allowing you to experience their best creations and gain insight into the chef's philosophy. The eight-course meal leaned heavily towards Asian flavours. For starters, we enjoyed nigiri and sashimi. While delicious, the quality of the ingredients didn't feel premium (despite the expectation). The Burnt Mushroom Custard was particularly noteworthy – an interesting interpretation in a dessert style. The remaining appetizers were good, but not mind-blowing. For our main course, we chose Wagyu beef, opting for a more expensive cut. The meat was rich and succulent, tender and perfectly seasoned. Dessert was delicious and a fitting end to our culinary journey. Service: The service was attentive and good, we never felt neglected. Dirty dishes were cleared promptly, but the overall pace felt slightly drawn-out. Conclusion: Fyn is a good restaurant, but we expected a little more. The quality of some ingredients felt average, though the flavour of all dishes was excellent, and we were overall satisfied. It was odd, however, to find many empty reviews, suggesting artificially inflated ratings.

WOW, what an incredible experience! I was fortunate enough to be invited for dinner and so glad I did. Dining here is an adventure for the tastebuds and a visual picnic in a nutshell, absolutely magical. The staff are so in sync and operate FYN as one solid unit, which is very rare these days as staff at other venues tend to look after their own tables but this doesn't happen here. Staff treat ALL the tables as their own, clearing tables, chatting about menu items, cracking some lightweight jokes, presenting the courses and wines. The staff are super knowledgeable, professional, friendly and very welcoming. They take pride in what they do at FYN, as if the venue was their own and it's such a pleasure to see and hear. Calling the food we ate at FYN "food" seems like an insult, as the word food itself is such a basic term and doesn't fully describe what the chef's have done, which is taking your tastebuds to heaven or on an adventure to wonderland! Don't let the size of each course fool you, you'll be very content with life by the time you get to dessert. So don't stuff yourself with drinks, you came for the fine dining adventure of a lifetime so make sure you save the space for that! The decor and course presentation is phenomenal, the amount of effort everyone adds to make your experience is absolutely incredible. Really and truly a jaw dropping, tummy popping magical experience. Thank you FYN for the amazing adventure, I'll be seeing you again!
