Foodie Adventure at a Traditional Korean Porridge Shop
Tucked away just a stone's throw from the bustling Myeong-dong shopping district lies a hidden gem for those seeking a culinary adventure off the beaten path. This quaint little shop boasts traditional Korean porridge with a twist, offering a refreshing break from the usual fare that tourists often indulge in.
Upon entering, we were greeted by the friendly lady owner who effortlessly conversed in English, providing us with menus available in Korean, Chinese, and English. With her expert guidance, we opted for the abalone vicera porridge and ginseng juice, her two most renowned specialties. Intrigued by the array of options, we also decided to sample the oyster mushroom porridge and mulberry juice, eager to embark on a journey of flavors.
Review of the Porridge
The abalone vicera porridge was a delightful symphony of flavors, with a silky texture complemented by the rich essence of abalone. Topped generously with seaweed and slices of mushroom and abalone, each spoonful offered a savory sensation that tantalized the taste buds. Likewise, the oyster mushroom porridge impressed with its abundance of plump, juicy oysters, paired harmoniously with spinach and fresh mugwort, creating a comforting and hearty dish.
Review of the Cold Pickled Radish Kimchi
For those with a penchant for tangy delights, the cold pickled radish kimchi is a must-try. The crunchy pickled radish combined with the refreshing cold kimchi soup provided a delightful burst of sourness, offering a refreshing contrast to the warm porridge.
Review of the Ginseng Juice
The ginseng juice proved to be a rejuvenating elixir, crafted from a blend of wild ginseng, milk, and honey. The addition of honey tempered the bitterness of the ginseng, resulting in a subtly sweet and invigorating beverage, perfect for replenishing one's energy.
Review of the Mulberry Juice
In contrast, the mulberry juice offered a smooth and refreshing indulgence. Blended with raw mulberry and honey, it struck a delicate balance between sweetness and tartness, leaving a lingering sense of satisfaction with every sip.
Conclusion
Our experience at this traditional Korean porridge shop was nothing short of exceptional. From the warm hospitality of the lady owner to the tantalizing array of dishes, it was a culinary journey that exceeded our expectations. For those seeking a break from the ordinary, this hidden gem comes highly recommended, promising an unforgettable dining experience infused with tradition and...
Read moreAfter a 5 hour layover and a 13 hour flight this was the first thing available that was open for the early hours we were in Korea waiting for our check in time. My family and I were exhausted and drained from the traveling and were looking for something that wouldn’t be too harsh on us and this was the perfect spot. They open at 7 because porridge is a breakfast dish and we could see why. My family ordered the pumpkin, kimchi, and chicken porridge and needless to say we were not disappointed. I had an upset stomach prior to coming to Korea and the bowl of porridge helped us forget the flights and for me my upset stomach felt much better and soothed. The delicate flavor of the chicken porridge was so fresh and clean you can tell how much love they put into their prep work to make such a beautiful dish. The wait time was about 10-15 minutes but it’s understandable. Fresh food needs time to make and if the food comes out too fast then that is concerning about how fresh it is. The wait only made the anticipation worse 😭. The only sad thing it we didn’t have one back home. Would go to eat...
Read moreWe came here at around 8am since it was the only thing open this early during Chuseok. We got the chicken congee set. Each set runs you about 20,000 won but it does come with a bunch of side dishes to enjoy. It was good but definitely one of the pricier items, it felt like we were paying the same price for food in Korea as Toronto which we weren’t expecting since we heard that food in Korea should be cheaper than Toronto.
We tried to get away with ordering one set to share between two people since I’m not too big on congee but lots of these mom and pop shops don’t allow for that lol which is understandable so she asked us to get a drink and so we got a strawberry smoothie. It was good but it was also like 6,000 won if I recall which is probably on the pricier side but a fair trade since we only got...
