Seldom do I write reviews for either good or bad experiences, but yesterdays dinner was such a letdown that I'll have to share what happened. As a gastronomic guide I spend my time visiting great local bars and restaurants across Catalunya with guests, I used to recommend Bar Muy Buenas to people asking for a place with good atmosphere and food, I had in fact just yesterday recommended them, but never again. My partner and I arrived around 22:30, we were told the kitchen was still open, great! The waiter took about 15 minutes to take our simple order of Ensaladilla Russa, Croquetas de jamon and Clotxa del Ebro con escalivada y sardina ahumada. The Ensadilla tasted ok, however the thinly sliced bread served alongside it was stale to the point I could not bite into it, as if the chef selected the worst bread he could find, perhaps on purpose. The croquetas were very dark in colour and hard, as if the frying oil had not been changed in a while, even tourist traps tend to serve better croquetas, dissapointing! I was looking forward to the Clotxa, surely they could not mess up this Catalan classic, I was taken back when the waiter serves us a Bomba instead of what I ordered, and not any Bomba, but the hardest to cut in half Bomba I've experienced in my life, bare in mind I go through 2 or 3 bombas a week in Barcelona. The meat filling was tastless, I thought to myself, is this a joke? We did not finish the Bomba despite feeling hungry. I said nothing to the waiter as the kitchen was closed by this point, and from having worked in hospitality I know that chefs get furious when having to prepare dishes once the kitchen closes, I didn't want tampered food. I wished they had said they were no longer serving food, instead of serving us sub-standard stuff. Perhaps the chef was having a bad day, and unfortunately I had fork out 34 euros for terrible food, this is how you drive...
Read moreWe popped in for an after dinner cocktail. My husband had a G&T (gin Mare) and loved it. I had a Pepe Rubianes (look him up if you don’t know who he was.) It was delicious. Prior to the dinner and drinks we had been at the theatre where some annoying people were checking their phones, chatting and eating sweets, during the performance. I did nothing, bit my tongue and even refrained from that most British habit of tutting. After my cocktail, we took the metro home where we encountered a slew of selfish, rude, idiots. I slated each and every one of them, in a barrage worthy of the Marvelous Mrs Maisel, especially the young man constantly touching his private parts. I may have done a chorus of Lily Allen’s ‘F* you’. Ten out of ten for the Pepe Rubianes cocktail. I highly recommend and would definitely repeat it. My husband may agree to a...
Read moreEasily overlooked, this little place is a true gem in the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona. Take a step back to an age of class and weathered elegance, tiled floors, art-deco finishes, and curved mirrors.
The menu is small and Regional. What it lacks in variety, it makes up for in quality. We tried four starters and two main dishes, and were wowed over and over again. The highlight for me was the calamari with artichokes. Wow, just wow! The Peasant‘s Bread with roasted vegetables and Sardines was also a highlight. Simple. Regional. Delicious.
Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. She was able to answer all of our questions, had a good sense of timing, and left us enough personal space to enjoy our meal.
And I almost forgot to mention— the prices are incredibly fair in comparison to the great food and atmosphere...
