What a shame. Our only curry of a week's holiday in Benidorm. The main courses were perfectly acceptable and nice and hot (temperature wise). Rice and chips ditto. Not as nice as our local take away at home, but decent enough. The issue surrounding their set menu for two regarding drinks choices were very annoying. Drinks were ordered based on a "two pints" inclusive basis. We were brought two small bottles, not pints. This was everually sorted after a lot of arguing. Apparently, despite being told of several lager options available, only San Miguel is a pint. The rest are smaller bottles. The restaurant owner chose to throw away two opened bottles of Cobra, rather than bring a second bottle each. Our drinks order was based entirely on information provided by the restaurant's own staff. Popadums were very soft and pretty awful. Pickle ttay was very nice and would have been excellent had the popadums been fresh and not old and stale. Starters were mixed. The onion bhajis were good and tasty. The chicken pakora was rubbery and tasteless. Mains were, as said earlier perfectly acceptable, but no better. We live in West Yorkshire where we enjoy top class curries from the Inidan and Pakistani businesses in our area, many if whom really know how to make top class dishes. Sadly these tonight were well below par. The peshwari naans were virtually inedible, filled with a glutinous butter and barely any coconut. None of our party of four cpuld stomach much of them. A positive note was that all the food was brought out piping hot which is excellent. The staff seemed disinclined to speak with us about the issues we had had. I eventually spoke with the manager who wasnt keen on giving us any discount, despite the poor experience. Eventually one was offered and for this I applaud him and is the reason I have given two stars not one. They advertise themselces as the best curry i n Benidorm. I suspect that there are many Indian restaurants in Benidorm that would easliy surpass India Gate. I suggest the owners visit Leeds, Bradford or Hudderafield to learn how a curry and naan bread making really works. If you are looking for a curry in Benidorm, I can't recommend India Gate sadly. I'd think almost anywhere would surpass their standards. A real shame. I wanted to like the place. Think I will stick to eating curry where they actually know how to make it in future. I wasnt offered a discount, despite the poor experience. I had to ask and argue for one which to be fair was eventually offered. That was appreciated.
In short, by all means visit India Gate and make up your own mind. Cant believe some of the reviews on here. The reviewers need to visit West Yorkshire where you can get a really good curry. Maybe we just caight them at I G on a bad day. I hope so. Good luck if you choose to...
Read moreI was recommended this place and thought I’d give it a try, as I had food a couple of nights ago from Nepali Indian Cuisine. It was a Saturday night and expect it to be busy as Benidorm is mobbed tonight. I waited for a while to place my order. I ordered a South Indian Garlic Curry, Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi, Chicken Pakora and Chicken Tikka Starter with the usual Pillaw Rice, Garlic Nan and Chips. Waited around 40 minutes for the starters to be served. The chicken pakora was really small pieces x 4 , and the chicken tikka was 4 x very small pieces. Wasn’t happy with the starters to be honest. Waited another 30 minutes for the mains to arrive. When the curries arrived and the chilli chicken looked like a Chinese dish chilli chicken in sweet n chilli sauce, I sent it back and asked it be changed to a garlic tikka dish as I ordered, after ten mins they brought it back and it appeared to be a chicken curry with extra garlic in it with plain chicken. I then asked for it to be changed again as it wasn’t what I ordered. Instead I said to the waiter to ask the chef to make an authentic spicy chicken karahi, with peppers and onions. However, they refused to make it and change the curry. In the meantime we ate the jalfrezi as we were hungry and looking forward to our dinner and ended up cancelling the curry as the Nan and rice had went cold. We asked that the curry was removed from the bill and the owner refused to do so and began an argument with us. We said that we are paying customers and want good food and that they should have made as we ordered. Overall, the customer experience was 1 out of 10. There were no customer service skills and I guess we were just ajither number to them and they weren’t bothered if we came back or not. The food was 2 out of 10. If you really know your Indian curries and like authentic Indian cuisine the. This isn’t the place. The restaurant is on a busy strip amongst many other restaurants such as steak houses, Italian, pizza and pastas. The people who sat behind me were at the steak restaurant next door and I do say that their food looked amazing when it was served. Overall rating for India Gate for food, quality, service and pricing : 4 out of 10.
I am giving my honest opinion as I eat out regularly and travel everywhere to rate the food and experience out of 10.
I ate at the Nepali restaurant couple of days ago and rate their food better. 6 out of 10.
On Monday I will try the Curry Leaf and...
Read moreForget about all 5 star reviews you see here on google, new owners from Pakistan, since June 2023, are now running this place.
I have visited India gate more than 20 times during the last 5 years and decided to give the new owners a second chance (first time was not good).
Food was terrible. Service was worse than terrible. I mean really really bad.
We waited for 1.5h and when the food arrived they had forgotten the starter for 14 people, which they compensated us with a bottle of water we never asked for.
Further, the food that did arrive was not as ordered; dishes missing and mixed with other tables and most importantly, not good at all.
The owner did just make up excuses and try to talk around it, specifically highlighting that he did compensate us (14 people) with one bottle of water.
All in all, I cannot recommend India Gate to anyone anymore but what I can recommend is that the new owner goes back to Islamabad and opens a Pakistan street food restaurant and continues to deliver 1 star service and food to...
