After a long day, we wanted to enjoy Spanish cuisine in the heart of Malaga. We were drawn in by a charming free table right in the center, at El Gallo Ronco. We were served by a waiter named Gabriele, who over the years seems to have perfected a professionally indifferent facial expression. We ordered food together with drinks, but were surprised when the first thing brought to our table were squid rings — not the drinks. The following dishes also arrived without any drinks in sight.
After quite some time, we finally received a warm bottle of white wine, and our request for ice was completely ignored. Perhaps the problems began when we were served by at least five different waiters throughout the evening.
In the end, we dined on not-so-tasty meat, rubbery octopus, and dry bread. When it came time to pay, we were presented with an unreasonably high bill. Upon closer inspection, we discovered that the bill included an extra bottle of wine and a salad we never ordered. The only gesture of “goodwill” from the staff was issuing a corrected bill. When we asked who was responsible for the mistake, it turned out that no one was.
Perhaps the restaurant’s concept is “surprises” — unexpected waiters, random dishes, and a bill that feels like a lottery. Unfortunately, this time we didn’t hold the...
Read moreI must first thank the wonderful lady who granted me clemency by allowing me to see the show 30 minutes into the performance. It was a full house with not a single seat available and I had no reservation. She urged me to book a seat for next week but I told her my flight left the next day. So, being the wonderful person that she is, she created a space for me where there was none so I could enjoy the show. And what a magnificent show it was! I've seen flamenco dancers perform in Barcelona and Miami, but nothing could have prepared me for the intensity of this performance. No video recording is allowed, although you are allowed to take pictures without flash. Carmen was sensational! The way she dances flamenco is both captivating and resplendent! Her male counterpart was equally impressive. His footwork is glorious and his presence commanding! The singers and guitarist are unmatched in their technicality and precision. Their voices are both transcendent and passionate. They filled every inch of the space with awe. For one hour, they enthralled the audience with magic and had us on our feet at the end of each breathtaking performance. If you are ever in Málaga, please do yourself a favor and reserve a seat at CalYCanto. You'll be...
Read moreFirst of all I need to emphasise that I never leave reviews, be it for good or bad experiences. So me writing this really means something. Firstly, staff wasn’t overly friendly and brought 3 times the wrong order to our table. This in itself isn’t that bad, it can happen, but we had to justify ourselves that we didn’t order those dishes. The third time they brought us the aubergine and told us we ordered it. We discussed with them that we didn’t order the aubergine but instead the calamari. Then we got told they were out of calamari, we should take the aubergine instead. Towards the end of our dinner we saw that the neighbour table got served a big plate of calamari. Secondly, the quality of the food was under average. The prawns tasted like absolutely nothing while having garlic in the “sauce” and still had some shells left on them. The potatoes in the octopus dish were undercooked and the octopus itself didn’t taste like octopus. The only dish we had that was acceptable was the lamb skewer which tasted nice but was overpriced for what it was. I have been to Spain may times and also eaten tapas many times and what they were serving was so far off from other experiences that i can only recommend to stay away...
