La Rambla comes from the Arabic word ramla, meaning “sandy riverbed”. Originally, this area was the riverbed of the “Torrente de la Riera”, which was diverted after a devastating flood at the beginning of the 15th century. The old riverbed was then converted into today’s avenue in the 19th century. You can still sense its topography. It lies slightly lower than the surrounding areas. Plaza de España feels like a small hilltop.

Stopped by for a quick coffee with a friend before our nearby meeting. Although the place wasn’t busy, the drinks took quite a while to prepare. We decided to go inside and change the order to take away, but by then they were just being made.
As we were short on time, I asked for two ice cubes on the side to cool my coffee faster. To my surprise, the staff asked me to make an additional card payment of €0.50 for the ice cubes. I was curious and asked why the charge was applied. The staff member seemed unsure but explained that they offer iced coffee on the menu at a higher price, so he had to charge extra.
