When we learned that Segovia was the birthplace of roast suckling pig we decided that we needed to try it there, and Restaurante Duque is a place where they’ve been serving it for decades. We couldn’t understand how they could roast a whole pig in such a way that the skin is so crispy that it crackles (and is delightful!) while the meat is tender, juicy, and melts in your mouth. We visited with our tour guide, who has been going there for decades and told us that every time he’s been there the experience has been almost identical, so they get high marks for consistency as well. We also had a roasted lamb shank which was different from any other lamb I’ve had. It was incredibly tender and it had a milder taste than you often get from lamb, but was also very good. The roasted potatoes were excellent, as were the other appetizers we ordered. And the service was outstanding. The restaurant is family-run, and my oldest son (in his 20s) was actually celebrating his birthday the day we were dining there. When the restaurant owners learned this they had a little ceremony where my son literally used the edge of a dinner plate to cut the pig in quarters, and then after doing so, he threw the plate onto the floor where it smashed into many pieces - this is apparently a tradition that is similar in spirit to christening a ship and was quite...
Read moreWalked in asking in English if they offered “tipico menu” which is a common set menu in restaurants here. Three staff lounging around. None appeared to understand basic English?! Then another guy walks out and seem to understand and hands me the menu. Meanwhile the other two guys at bar starts laughing. Obviously being rude and speaking in Spanish mocking me. It was extremely disrespectful. So we handed back the menu said “gracias” and was walking out. Next thing I hear in English mind you from one of the guys that was laughing “too expensive”. I mean WHAT?!I couldn’t hold my tongue and turned and said “wow you guys are so unprofessional and rude”. Then they rudely said “good bye”.
The owner of this establishment needs to seriously train the staff here dealing with tourists. This experience and treatment is so uncalled for and disrespectful. This has been by far THE worst treatment anywhere in Spain we have experienced in our two weeks road trip tour. And if it matters I’m Asian American. I would recommend all to stay away. Do not give you money to these rude disrespectful people. Especially if you’re Asian. Avoid avoid avoid....

First of all, one of the servers had a bad cold with a runny nose and red eyes. He shouldn’t have been there. We observed him grabbing his runny nose, then proceeded to grab silverware for customers. Thankfully he was not our server.
My husband ordered the suckling fried pig and it was merely crackling with feet intact. Very dry. I ordered the Monk Fish with shrimp, and it was very undercooked. (See photo)
Lastly, they appeared to not particularly care for us 2 Americans. We are easy folks. The only really friendly person was the tall slim gentleman in the white chef jacket and jeans that circulated around the restaurant. He was great!!!! We questioned if he was really the chef, or if we was hired to pretend to be since he was out front so often.
Best part of the meal...
