Mesón La Troya — Restaurant in Trujillo

We had a great experience today at Meson La Troya. Because it’s so popular, we had to put our number on a list (with no certainty of a table) and wait for a call. We were told there would be a 2 hour wait, but we were contacted earlier by a very patient staff member (as we have very poor Spanish). We ordered the €16 meal, which included a bottle of wine, starter and three courses. The food was typical of the local region- generous and hearty and the atmosphere in the restaurant jovial and welcoming. Despite the limitations of our Spanish, the staff were extremely helpful and patient with our ordering and when we needed to quickly organise a taxi to catch our bus, they organised it and ensured it arrived. We had a great meal in this restaurant which is superbly situated in the square, we ate inside this fantastic building and the waitress who served us was so hard working. When we tried to get a taxi back to our hotel at 10 30, it became impossible, the waiters tried many,many numbers. We faced a long,long walk in the dark. I have lived in Spain for over 20 years and the food I had here must have been the worst I have ever eaten! waited 45mins to then be told they haven't got the dish ordered... then this terrible stew made from oil and lamb that was 90% fat was served to me... nothing else just that... tried one piece of this oily dish and felt sorry for the lamb that had gone to make it! The waitress was lovely and a great spot.. and the desserts looked good, at least they weren't...
