Ultramarinos Huerta — Restaurant in Valencia

I went alone for lunch and ordered a starter and a glass of beer while I was looking at the menu. I said to the waiter that I would order something else. He was rude and dismissive as I think he thought that was all I wanted. I waited for 30 minutes for him to come back. Eventually I stood up and went inside and asked to pay as I was going to leave as I had been ignored. The waiter angrily told me to ‘go away’. I didn’t really understand as I was trying to pay. I turned to walk away and he said, you have to pay. I said I know, that is what I’m trying to do. So I tapped my card to pay. Then, the manager came out … and I thought he was going to listen to my complaint. Instead he used an expletive ( which was a much ruder version of ‘go away’)...

Having lived in Valencia for seven months I have been disappointed in the food on offer in most bars and restaurants and therefore not left a review for any places I have eaten….until now. Our meal at Huerta was, without doubt, the best so far. The food was traditional Spanish but with imaginative twists, perfectly prepared and delicious (the artichokes were amazing). The staff were attentive but not intrusive, super helpful and above all very friendly. It made my birthday a truly wonderful occasion. Excellent choice of very imaginative tapas & gallons of Turia beer (my favourite Valencian tipple), served by extremely friendly & helpful staff. We had braised ox tail (the special), a beautiful (sharing) entrecote steak, aubergine baked in honey with masses of fresh parmesan & some of the best ham & chicken croquettas we have ever tasted.
