Whilst on holiday in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, my boyfriend and I spent a few days enjoying meals at various restaurants along the Marina. One evening, we found ourselves at an unexpected location – an Indian restaurant. The place we initially planned to dine at was closed, so I decided to give this Indian restaurant a try, especially since my boyfriend had dined there before and had good things to say about the food.
Being Asian, my perception of Indian food is quite traditional, so I prepared myself for a more anglicised version. To my pleasant surprise, it was a refreshing change. I started with a mango lassi, which was nice. The service was excellent, and the staff were very friendly, offering a wide range of starters. Initially, I thought all the starters were deep-fried, which isn’t my preference, but I ended up choosing the seekh kebabs from the grill. Although they were a bit dry and bright red, they were still good.
For the main course, I decided to try the chicken jalfrezi. I was curious to see how it would compare to the jalfrezi I cook at home, and I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. I paired it with some tandoori roti, as naan bread tends to be too heavy for me. My boyfriend had onion bhajis for his starter and beef curry for his main, which I tasted but preferred my chicken dish for its flavour. He had his curry with rice, and we both enjoyed our meals thoroughly.
Throughout our dinner, I kept telling my boyfriend that I would cook authentic Indian food for him, using recipes passed down from my grandmother to my mum and then to me. Despite my initial hesitations, I felt that the restaurant did a good job catering to a predominantly British palate. The dishes were different from what I’m used to, but they were still very good.
I even asked our server about their biryani, and as soon as he described it, I realised it was quite different from what I’m used to, so I decided to pass on that. Nonetheless, it was a lovely evening, and I was impressed by the quality of the food. They asked me how spicy I wanted my food, and I opted for a medium-to-hot level, which was perfect. We were too full for dessert, and I usually prefer to skip it in favour of a starter.
Overall, it was a good experience, and I’m glad we decided to give this Indian restaurant a try. It was a pleasant surprise and a lovely evening in...

We ate here on a Monday evening in April. It was not overly busy and we were a table of two. They were prompt at getting the drinks to us however this is where the positives end. We ordered a poppadom and dip each. As we were eating, we noticed that one of the poppadom had a hair baked into it. Nobody came over to the table for over half an hour and we could not get anyone's attention. When they eventually came to bring our mains and clear the poppadom, we explained we no did not want the main as we had been put off the food due to the hair. The waiter fetched his manager who explained our food was ready now and needed eating. He said he would not charge us for the poppadom however we needed to eat the curry and that half an hour was an expected wait. We appreciate that it was fresh cooked however we now didn't feel as though we wanted to eat there. The food came - it was mediocre at best, very small portions of food. They cleared the main and we eventually asked for the bill when we could get anyone's attention. We payed and awaited change. They did knock off 10 percent - however we waited a long period for our change. We then noticed the waiter who was supposed to bring the change was serving other tables instead? Other tables also received shots with their bill. We eventually had to ask for the change so we could leave.
Staff were dismissive, very bad experience - I would advise you not...
Read moreBooked a table here for my partner's birthday whilst in Puerto Calero.
The whole experience was a total and utter disappointment!
On arrival we were shown to a table with a few bits of plastic stars and circles scattered across it. We ordered our food, some poppadoms and chutneys, onion bhajee, chicken pakora, channa dhansak, chicken pathia, pulaw rice and chips.
When the main courses were delivered the waitor announced each dish and said chicken channa dhansak. I said I'd ordered channa dhansak not chicken (as I'm vegetarian) and he said sorry it was just channa.
When I spooned some on to my plate there was a big chunk of chicken in there!!! I called another waiter over and explained and he took it away. By the time my proper channa dhansak had arrived my partner had nearly finished his meal!
The currys were terrible. My partner said his chicken pathia tasted like a tin of Homepride curry cooking sauce, whilst i dont think my channa 'dhansak' had never seen a lentil and was gritty and tasteless.
I asked 3 different waitors for the bill and eventually had to go in to the inner restaurant to pay at the till.
What was supposed to be a special meal was ruined by bad service, poor food and indifferent staff.
I would not recommend this place if you're looking for a good traditional...
