Bang Matbar - Göteborg — Restaurant in Göteborgs Stad

Modern fine dining with intriguing new flavor combinations, off the beaten path near Järntorget - Bang impressed us.

First - the food. There is a suggested menu that has to be ordered by everyone at the table, or you can order individual dishes - we did the latter to maximize the experience, sharing everything. The dishes started off decidedly simple yet delicious, with a few bold flavors in classic combinations - pickles with sour cream and honey, anchovies with grilled lemon and bread. Then, as the meal progressed, we were treated to increasingly complex and wonderful dishes that nevertheless held true to a few strong core flavors - celeriac with lovage and toasted hazelnuts, lamb tartare with burnt cabbage and samphire, duck breast with turnip and buckthorn. In short, we left not only satisfied but inspired.

The service was immaculate, though maybe this was in some part due to us being the only diners at the time. After chatting with the attentive and knowledgeable waitress we learned that while Bang is packed in the weekends, weekdays are painfully slow. This is simply criminal - if I lived in Gothenburg I'd be a regular.

Lastly, and perhaps most surprising, the pricing feels very fair, which is a breath of fresh air. For the same caliber of experience, I have paid significantly steeper prices elsewhere. For me, this "small" discrepancy would make the difference between Bang being a yearly visit vs. a monthly visit.

Our visit could only be described with one word; catastrophy.

We had a reservation for 8:15pm. It was not until 9pm that we could order something to drink. When the food (finally) arrived, half of the table was waiting for the food, whilst the other half received theirs.

A lot can be said, but I’ll just say; avoid this place.

Helhetsintrycket beror helt på smakerna i maten vilka var mycket bra. Övriga delar av besöket lämnar en hel del annat att önska. Vi valde dessvärre att själva välja rätter från menyn istället för att ta den färdigkomponerade avsmakningsmenyn. Mellan kall och varm mat väntade jag ca 1 timma och när väl varm mat serverades fick jag inte mindre än två varma rätter inom loppet av ca en minut. När det märkliga i detta sätt att servera mat påpekades efteråt var förklaringen att köket lagar maten i sekvens så att en viss rätt lagas för alla bord samtidigt. Detta fungerar säkert bra om alla gäster kommer samtidigt och alla äter avsmakningsmenyn men arbetar man på ett sådant udda sätt i köket så bör man nog inte erbjuda à la carte över huvud taget. När vi påpekade detta efteråt så gav svaret också en känsla av att det var vårt eget fel eftersom vi hade beställt rätter som inte låg i sekvens med hur köket lagar rätterna. Att äta en full måltid på Bang är inte billigt och då kan man förvänta...
