this restaurant has been the closest experience to a real sushi bar that I have had outside of japan. It was worth going to Gothenburg just to try it.
The place is very small. It can sit at most 14 guests or so. For the best possible experience you should sit at the bar. The chef is a very nice guy. You can tell that sushi is his passion by how he talks about it, and how carefully he cuts the fish and assembles your meal. He is helped by his father and a waitress, so it is basically a small family-run business. However, they are superb craftsmen so the experience is more polished than what you get in many fancy restaurants out there.
They only have one option, which is omakase. They serve you some sashimi to start, then about 10 nigiri pieces, decided by the chef based on what fish he got at the market. Then at the end, they let you repeat the piece that you liked most, which I found a very nice touch.
The quality of the pieces is out of this world. I don't know where they get their fish, but the quality is just amazing. There wasn't a single piece that I didn't find outstanding. When I got the otoro I thought I was going to cry.
Apart from the extremely high quality, the guy also tries to innovate and to put his personal touch on every thing he serves. He gave us a taco with perch on a leaf of lettuce that was amazing. Also we got a seabass nigiri with some truffle salt on top that was mouth watering. By the end he serves some charred nigiris, like a charred langoustine with chili soy that I loved. Even the dessert, which was a homemade yuzu sorbet, was delightful.
They serve you the pieces one at a time, freshly made, so that you have all the time you need to enjoy it. This is something that many fancy sushi places don't do, serving you all your nigiris at the same time, which forces you to eat them rather quickly, I feel. Not a problem here. All in all, you are going to spend around two hours eating here. However, they make the experience extra enjoyable by explaining you every piece in detail. Apart from that, they are super nice. They asked us how we got there, and told us about the restaurant and how they started, all without being overbearing or annoying.
We loved the experience so much that we just went again the next day, which amused them quite a bit. For the experience and the quality, I found it priced...
Read morei would highly recommend going here. This is a five star save a small comment in the bottom of this review.
Very well met by the chef and staff, friendly, welcoming, and responsive in their engagement.
Food was excellent. Chef used ingredients of the season which was done in a way that elevated the culinary experience. He knew exactly when to introduce palett cleanser furthermore he kept a great tempo in serving the dishes.
Chef makes the effort to know what one likes and dislikes so he was keen on adapting the dishes beforehand to meet ones preferences or needs. From the moment of booking he made contact and followed up to ensure service quality.
The conversations weren't forced, I felt like chef and staff let the guest lead the dance, in a way you wouldn't think of, it was effortless and friendly, with personality and life experiences interspersed. Whether intentional or not, it was exactly to the degree it should've been.
We had the sake menu, I will leave this to personal preference, i enjoy sake, and we had a great pairing and variety. staff tailored the menu for the person unfamiliar to it, great service and great sake. super friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable staff.
i have only deducted one star from food, though it should be half a star, because one element of the dessert (a sponge cake like part) was a little too dry, i felt it should be lighter and fluffier. the rest of the dessert was...
Read moreWe had an amazing omakase experience at Koizen. Chef John is amazingly skilled and knowledgeable, and guides you through the experience, explaining the food and giving helpful hints on how best to enjoy it. It was very enjoyable to simply watch him prepare the fish, and the tastes of course were absolutely delicious. The dishes were varied, each with a distinct taste, and all super enjoyable.
Expect to pay around 2,000kr per person - the omakase itself is 1,200kr, and we paid extra for the bluefin tuna courses which was on offer especially when we visited. We chose the wine pairing as well, which was nice but also a bit pricey at 850kr. There's also a sake pairing available.
Service was super friendly and catered to every preference. The ambience is intimate and quiet, but not too quiet, some soft jazz plays in the background and it lends itself well to quiet conversation. There are 10 seats at the bar, and another 4 at separate tables. Interior decoration is minimalist but beautiful.
It's an expensive meal as you might expect, suitable for a special treat only, but we left feeling it was thoroughly worth it for a terrific experience, ambience, and food. Hoping to...
