this restaurant has been the closest experience to a real sushi bar that I have had outside of japan. It was worth going to Gothenburg just to try it. The place is very small. It can sit at most 14 guests or so. For the best possible experience you should sit at the bar. The chef is a very nice guy. You can tell that sushi is his passion by how he talks about it, and how carefully he cuts the fish and assembles your meal. He is helped by his father and a waitress, so it is basically a small family-run business. However, they are superb craftsmen so the experience is more polished than what you get in many fancy restaurants out there. They only have one option, which is omakase. They serve you some sashimi to start, then about 10 nigiri pieces, decided by the chef based on what fish he got at the market. Then at the end, they let you repeat the piece that you liked most, which I found a very nice touch. The quality of the pieces is out of this world. I don't know where they get their fish, but the quality is just amazing. There wasn't a single piece that I didn't find outstanding. When I got the otoro I thought I was going to cry. Apart from the extremely high quality, the guy also tries to innovate and to put his personal touch on every thing he serves. He gave us a taco with perch on a leaf of lettuce that was amazing. Also we got a seabass nigiri with some truffle salt on top that was mouth watering. By the end he serves some charred nigiris, like a charred langoustine with chili soy that I loved. Even the dessert, which was a homemade yuzu sorbet, was delightful. They serve you the pieces one at a time, freshly made, so that you have all the time you need to enjoy it. This is something that many fancy sushi places don't do, serving you all your nigiris at the same time, which forces you to eat them rather quickly, I feel. Not a problem here. All in all, you are going to spend around two hours eating here. However, they make the experience extra enjoyable by explaining you every piece in detail. Apart from that, they are super nice. They asked us how we got there, and told us about the restaurant and how they started, all without being overbearing or annoying. We loved the experience so much that we just went again the next day, which amused them quite a bit. For the experience and the quality, I found it priced very fairly.

We were visiting Gothenburg and decided to get proper sushi and so we tried this place. It is a very intimate sushi place. An exclusive seating for a few diners but if you want to properly appreciate the art and hardwork of a sushi chef, omakase is the proper way to do it. This place does not disappoint. It offers an experience you will not get in a lot of places. The food is fresh, flavorful and everything is almost perfection. I personally think this deserves a Michelin star more than another place in the country which has already one. Koizen does it better and takes sushi to another level. It is also the demeanor of the family that runs the restaurant, it feels like being welcomed into a Japanese home and being fed only the best in the world. I definitely recommend this place - and if you can, try their sake selection! They have a selection of unique and very good ones. You will leave this place with your tummy full of good food, your heart full of good memories and a whole lot of respect to Japanese cuisine. And a happy soul!

It’s an experience you should try atleast once. The quality of the ingredients are top notch and the preparation is done with care. The service is also fantastic. We had an Omakase set with sake tasting set. It was really good. I definitely recommend the sake with the omakase since they complimented each other and the sake taste different every time you try a new dish or even change the order you try your sake. Although I would have loved it more if there is more story telling, like where the fish came from and the inspiration behind the menu and so on. The introduction to sake was amazing though. She explains with care and points out where the sake is from and what are the ingredients and how it taste like. Even for someone that doesn’t like alcohol much like me enjoyed it a lot. Recommend for a luxury dinner with friends or couples. It will definitely impress 😉

Alvin is a great chef. Very nice, talented, and definitely passionate about Japanese cuisine. Having gone to Omakase in Japan, Hong Kong, and Seattle, I must also say Alvin's cuisine is very unique, a creative fuse of Swedish taste and Japanese core. A modern Japanese experience? Perhaps, but it's definitely very unique. Although I am also not entirely impressed and felt that that there's an over dependence on the sauce, also the firmness of the rice isn't quite up to how it could have been better. But, I am very touched by the entire setup. Very nice restaurant, very delicate taste. Definitely hope to come back and see how Koizen will evolve and improve overtime. Thanks for the wonderful dinner. All the best!! And until next time.

This was truly an outstanding experience. Definitely one of the best Omakase experiences I've had. I learned so much about the food I ate. The ingredients were fresh and prepared in front of me with the utmost care. The chef and the owners of the restaurant have really given Gothenburg a restaurant the city can be proud of. Make sure you try the Drinking menu with beer and Sake. The Sake tasters were out of this world. Never knew sake could be so varied. So happy I got to experience great food, hospitality and most of all an authentic Japanese Omakase experience. I'll be back soon. ❤️❤️❤️

Really enjoyed my birthday dinner here. I loved all the sushi served and the whole experience. The fish was very fresh and expertly prepared. I especially loved the fatty tuna and the Arctic Char. The place is quite small so it's important to book in advance. They have opened up a new location and I'm eager to try the new restaurant too which has a larger kitchen and the same chef. I know they are also popular this coming Christmas season so definitely look into booking ahead.
