Excited to see that there was a dumpling house in town we went for a dinner at Kung Fu Dumpling. Having resided in Toronto, Canada where there are many fresh dumpling shops (where the dough is made fresh and rolled by hand and the filling is made fresh), I was hoping for a similar experience.
We ordered the pork dumplings, steam buns and a noodle soup with beef.
The dumplings were good, and we were happy to have tried them. However, the steam buns were not freshly made (as in freshly made right before they are served). We heard the microwave going in the kitchen (which is behind a curtain in the restaurant) and when the buns came out they were hotter than hell and then turned chewy like rubber balls, which is what happens in the microwave. The inside was just very salty.
The soup was also extremely salty and was basically a spicy broth with rice noodles and a few slices of beef. I would have expected at least a few greens and maybe a mushroom or two just to make it more interesting?
I thought the filling of the steam buns and the soup tasted similar and after the dinner I glanced over to the glass fridge by the cash where the drinks are kept. There I saw around 20 jars of Lee Kum Kee's (or whatever generic brand it might have been) Sichuan Style sauce. I can only assume that this sauce was the flavor they picked for the food.
Really disappointed. The few items on the menu should be made well in such a focused restaurant. I give it two stars thanks to...
Read moreThe owner, as a previous visitor already mentioned, is a one man army indeed. It's a small restaurant with about 5 tables, if you're looking for a "fast food" restaurant, this probably won't be your place to go. But if you're looking for excellent, authentic Chinese food and bring a little time, you'll love Kung Fu Dumpling. We visited on a Saturday and ordered the chicken and pork dumplings, also asked for a bowl of noodles each, but the owner recommended to only order one bowl and split it. I was sceptical, but I didn't want to argue with the cute lady. The dumplings were delicious, we each got a small bowl of the "Peking noodles", it looked and tasted like ramen and was wonderful. My company was sated afterwards, for me it could have been 1 or 2 more dumplings, but honestly, she wasn't wrong. The prices are great, maybe even a little too low. I would have gladly payed 10 or 20 % more for the same quality. It is apparently possibly to order the food as take away, but as mentioned before, it may take a little waiting period. (worth it thought!)
We will definitely visit the...
Read moreQuite disappointed, not sure where the 4.2 comes from. For starters, it's definitely a takeout place. Eating there is not recommended, as the place is quite shabby and doesn't feel super clean: there's no bathroom (which can be okay for a place like this), but the only way to wash your hands is a basin that was full of dirty water as it didn't drain. Cutlery and chopsticks are in big trays where you just pick some... this in the middle of a pandemic, of course. The place is completely silent, so much for the ambiance. We had steamed veggie buns and dumplings (pork/vegetables). In general everything feels defrosted. The buns were really dry, which is a bit counterintuitive, and the filling not particularly tasty. The dumplings are very oily (emphasis on both very and oily), and the pork ones not particularly tasty. They don't have an alcohol license, so they only have sodas and light Norrlands (also fine, but just so you know). Honestly...
