Don't let the front shop fool you: Mellqvist has a back room and it's very nice and cozy. This place was my first stop in Stockholm and by the time I got there I had walked 20km and was frozen. Luckily they serve some of the most sugary and addicting hot chocolate I have ever drank.
I had no clue what kind of sandwhich I ordered except that it had a local blue cheese and walnuts in there. The taste of the cheese was quite strong, but that was to be expected, and the staff and place was very friendly. The interior of Mellqvist is a perfect combination of the former Scandinavian style of very straight edges and clear spaces, with the newer style of allowing nature to enter the house again: a unfinished brick wall next to gleaming dark green tiles, sheepskin in cozy nooks next to straight wooden chairs, all topped off by a lot of lit candles and the ruckus of lunch-rushhour. I liked the vibe in Mellqvist because it was warm and cozy, a stark contrast from the weather outside, and it showed how the stereotype of Scandinavians is only one side to the story of the country and people.I only didn't order a second cup of hot chocolate because that would mean I would...

This is the place where bartenders and baristas remember your face and ask you how you're doing. In addition to such typical coffee shop visitors as students with laptops, here you can see really interesting characters. An old man with a book at the next table can suddenly start talking to you. In case you tell him that you do not speak Swedish, he will easily switch to English and begin to ask you about what your tattoos mean. You can come here for the first time and feel like you have had breakfast here all your life, and on Fridays, you come here to drink...
Read moreIt's like a hybrid bar, with plenty of pastries and a lot of sandwiches. The sandwiches are small for their price. The baguettes are better. I found the waiting for coffee rather chaotic. There's a lot of people passing by in a cramped space: servers, people ordering and making food, people waiting for a coffee. Coffee was good, but it takes long and it's not clear who is being served. If you bother ordering the same drink it happens that someone jumps the queue and takes your drink. Big positive: the seating area inside is pleasant to sit, spacious and has a mix of bigger tables and solo ones. A few people were working on...
