The James Joyce bar, located on Pelikanstrasse in Zurich, is a unique establishment that beautifully blends Irish charm with Swiss hospitality. The bar is famous for its connection to the renowned Irish writer James Joyce, who spent the last years of his life in Zurich. In fact, the bar’s fittings were shipped from the iconic Irish bar of the former Jury’s Hotel in Dublin, adding an authentic touch to the ambiance. The bar is also in close proximity to Fluntern Cemetery, where James Joyce is buried. This connection adds a layer of historical significance to the bar, making it a must-visit for literature enthusiasts and fans of Joyce. The James Joyce bar is not just about history and literature; it’s also about good food and drinks. They host a popular ribs night every Monday, where you can enjoy juicy, delicious spare ribs with a variety of sauces. The bar also offers a wide selection of whisky, wines, and beers. In summary, the James Joyce bar offers a unique experience that combines history, literature, and gastronomy. Read moreThis restaurant had been on my bucket list for quite a while and maybe had too high expectations of it? The food was decent, but not impressive… I tried their Caesars Salad and Club sandwich. Salad was fine, they were a bit sparing with croutons and bacon though! The sandwich was mediocre as well, meat was flavourful but there was barely any sauce on the bread which I found to be very disappointing. What did catch my eye was the ambiance: A victorian style pub with comfortable seating, more on the elegant side. Especially the fact that there was a group of irish guys next to my table made it seem like I was sitting in Dublin rather than Zurich!
Overall, I think I went in with the wrong expectations. Segmüller Collection usually stands out for high quality restaurants and culinary journeys but at the end of the day - it’s simply a pub! Hearty dishes are meant to be filling but definitely not something to die for. Therefore, not sure if I would come back for the food but definitely for a couple of beers or gins with...
Read moreI meticulously researched the place and thought it would be a good spot to spent the evening. What a grab in the bucket. My gut feeling proved me right when we were greeted by the very unpleasant waitress who obviously just wanted to get rid of us. She never even looked at us. The reserved seating was bad, like literally the cats table, even though I reserved a quiet spot. The drinks - an old fashioned and a Negroni - were so watered down I sometimes confused them with my actual water. The food was abysmal. The fish and chips consisted of 3 tender sized fish bites. Ludicrous for the 30+ bucks they dare to charge for it. Maybe enough for the high flying finance crowd that made up the rest of the outfit. Anyway, we went afterwards to the Relay d’Entrecote and had a great evening, where we were treated with respect and a smile, but I’d not return...
