Experience the 1st Vegetarian Restaurant in the World Did you know that Zürich, Switzerland hosts the world's first vegetarian restaurant? Named after its founder, Ambrosius Hiltl and founded in 1898, Haus Hiltl remains the preeminent eatery for plant-based fine dining in the elegant, sophisticated city. I had a chance to experience the vegetarian restaurant this weekend during a meditational trip to the Swiss lands. Located near the world-famous Bahnhofstrasse (Zürich's famous downtown street and one of the world's most exclusive shopping areas), you can order off the à la carte menu or indulge like Kings and Queens from the popular Hiltl Buffet that features over 100 home-made delicacies (half of which are pure vegan), freshly squeezed fruit juices, and desserts. The restaurant incorporates a vast outdoor terrace and two levels of dining. Recorded by Guinness World Records for its place in history, Haus Hiltl is managed by the fourth generation of the Hiltl family, who also established an academy featuring seminars and courses. Moreover, this location is home to Switzerland’s first vegetarian butcher. Stay active and eat clean my brothers and sistas!

The buffet had lots of great options, and everything tasted delicious and fresh! You get your plate downstairs by the buffet, fill it up with your choices of food and then weigh it, get a ticket and your server scans it. The price is based on weight, and the picture I'm adding to my review was $32. I was full when I left and satisfied. The only thing I was kinda turned off by, was that our server was quite rude when I had just a few questions about the process, since I'd never been here before and while I was eating, she reached over my plate to scan the ticket and then scratched her initials or something on it with her pen... it was as if I needed to pay up so I asked, shall I pay you now? She mumbled something like nah, you pay before you leave.....ok?! So settle down with your scanner that looks like a credit card machine while I'm eating, please! Lol! All in all it was a great experience otherwise. Maybe she was just having a bad night, It happens! Highly recommend, excellent flavors, wonderfully done.

It’s quite an experience and worth your time. Walking into an European restaurant and not having to ask if it’s vegetarian or not, is a treat in itself. Service could be slow but buffet is a great option with wonderful seating options. Waitstaff was helpful in resolving a wrong weighing of the food. Yes that’s a thing to weigh each plate of whatever you load on your plate. Food spread all vegetarian genres. Indian, Italian, Asian, Middle-eastern & continental. Don’t bother too much if you are regular eater it will come to €26-30. Heavy eater could be €30+. Lots to choose from. One could get overwhelmed with the choices , but you know what you eat, go ahead and indulge. A good touch to wrap up your visit by picking up free postcards about the restaurant. Indian food was well prepared. Desserts had saffron shrikand. Water is charged for. Don’t miss the chutney section, especially Coriander chutney. Reservation helps. If you are lazy order ala carte, but be prepared to wait.

We were visiting Zurich for the new years weekend from London and were excited to dine here on a Friday (at 5:45pm, without reservation). We were offered a table for two in the middle of the restaurant on the second floor. We requested if the table could be moved near the windows; but were told unfortunately that they had reservations for the duration of our dinner. We noted that there quite a few tables near the windows still open throughout our dinner and until we left (around 7pm). We ordered a mushroom stroganoff and a potato rosti with grilled vegetables. The rosti was fantastic, so were the choices of cocktails (especially Italian 75). The mushroom stroganoff had too much rice and was overly salty. The waiter was kind enough to remove the charge on one of our drinks due to the disappointing dish. Overall, the restaurant has a fantastic choice of vegetarian food. We probably won’t come back due to the service and the quality of food, compared to the price.

Oldest Vegetarian Restaurant for a Reason It would be unfair to claim I don't love this place, seeing as how I've been to Zurich twice and visited both times, when I only had 10 hours to spare. It's an experience and a delight. The pay by the pound can get pricey if you go in hungry or hoping to "try everything." Hone it in and know what you're interested in, or make a quick transfer from your savings of bitcoin account if you're looking to get experimental. What I appreciate most is their clear care and concern for the qualities of delicious vegetables. Most "vegetarian" restaurants these days make the mistake of masquerading vegetables as meats when there's perfect flavor when taking veggie's true qualities into concern. They take their time and create some complex flavors at the walk away bar, especially the curry. There's a reason they're the oldest and wisest vegetarian bar in all the land.

The Haus Hiltl is located in the middle of Zürich City and has a nice ambience on the inside. There is a large buffet with a mix of many vegan and vegetarian options. Everything is clearly labeled. You have the option to eat at the buffet or to dine a la carte. We chose to eat at the buffet, which was very crowded at the time. I find it unfortunate that you have to pay by weight, especially if you decide to get a lot of vegetables with high water content. If you want to leave the Hiltl with a full stomach, the receipt will be rather expensive. The food looked and smelled great, but the taste was mediocre at best. We sat upstairs where we had a waiter assigned to us. He was attentive and answered our questions. All in all, the food was too expensive for the mediocre taste and for being calculated by weight. It's great to have a restaurant offering only vegetarian and vegan options though!
