Ristorante Conti — Restaurant in Zurich

Conti dining experience - exorbitantly priced with poor service Conti was our first brush with dining in Zurich. We had just arrived at our hotel, Ambassador, which is across the street from Conti. The reception desk recommended Conti Italian restaurant after we shared with them that we are vegetarians. We love Italian and were excited to try it out. The waiter at Conti lost all interest in us once we told him that we were vegetarian and are teetotalers. We finally found 2 dishes that looked vegetarian- a cheese ravioli and vegan tartar. We asked the waiter if these would be good. He did not say a word just made a face that I interpreted to mean that he wasn’t terribly excited about it. All items on the menu had 2 prices listed - one for a small portion and one (regular) portion. We got a bit of a sticker shock when we saw the prices- small portions were around 27CHF and the regular portions were 38CHF and 43CHF. When the dishes came they looked like they were starter plates - very small. The waiter never came back to check if we were doing ok. After we were done, he simply got the check and never asked if we would like any dessert. The bill was for regular portions - 11CHF for water and 38 and 43CHF for the dishes. The only time the waiter actually spoke was to ask us to enter the tip, before running our card.

We have now been in Zurich, Lauterbrunnen (Silberhorn) and Geneva for 8 days and looking back, 2 things about the Conti experience are striking - it was the most expensive and yet most underwhelming dining experience we have had in our entire stay in Switzerland, and it was the only restaurant where we were asked to add tip - we have of course added tip to our bills in many of the other fine dining establishments in Zurich and the other 2 towns, but nowhere else the waiter actually demanded it.

Der erste Anlauf am 19.1.23 misslang vollkommen, weil unsere telefonische Reservation vom November 2022 für 8 Personen wahrscheinlich in der alten Agenda steckenblieb. Bei meinem Anruf kurz vor dem Termin, stellte sich heraus, dass keine Reservation notiert war, sehr ärgerlich auch kein Platz mehr. Dieses Mal verlangten wir eine Mailbestätigung. Die Gerichte waren allesamt gut bis sehr gut (Risotto). Ausnahme der Spinat war fad, vollkommen ohne Salz und Gewürze, nur aus dem Kochapparat. Dafür offerierte der freundliche und routinierte Kellner gratis bocconcini «Gioia», was gut gemeint war, aber leider auf der Rechnung mit Fr 42.— verrechnet wurde. Er korrigierte es aufgrund meiner Nachfrage. Auch die «marinierten Pfirsiche» entpuppten sich als harte Scheiben von Nektarinen, hingegen war das Tiramisu ausgezeichnet. Das Hühnerfutter (Trockenes Müesligemisch) unter der Glace ist unnötig.

Die Weine waren alle perfekt. Einzig beim Prosecco zum Aperitif wurde bestenfalls nur ein ½ dl. in die ungeeichten Gläser eingeschenkt. Fantasievollere alkoholfreie Aperos und Getränke sind leider noch nicht im Conti angekommen. Man kann ja nicht ständig reklamieren und die Stimmung verderben, weshalb viele oft schweigen. Was aber nicht akzeptiert werden kann, ist das Verhalten des «Chef de Service». Er hat uns weder am Eingang begrüsst noch später am Tisch, er war den ganzen Abend (4 Std.) NIE an unserem Tisch und hat sich auch nicht verabschiedet, es gab auch sonst keine richtige Verabschiedung, die uns in Erinnerung geblieben wäre.

Die Aufmerksamkeit des «Gastgebers» galt den ganzen Abend nur seinen bekannten Stammkunden, die er umschwärmte, sowie der Eingangstüre, wo er sich später dann meistens festhielt. Eine solche Selektion grenzt fast schon an Diskriminierung, auch wenn er sich dessen vielleicht nicht bewusst ist und das Conti keine neuen Stammgäste braucht. Unser Kellner für die 8 Gäste am Tisch war geübt, effizient, kühl und anständig, mehr nicht. Von Italiatà und Bella Vita oder Familiengefühlen mit italienischem Charme und Nonchalance spürten wir nichts. Auch Eleganz, stuckverzierte Decken sowie hochwertige Kornleuchter trösten nicht darüber hinweg, wenn von allen Mitarbeitenden im Conti jegliche Empathie fehlt. Schade, dass die Werbung des Conti Erwartungen weckte, die mich etwas enttäuschten. Das bekannt hohe Preisniveau sollte kein Hinderungsgrund sein, auch emotional...

My wife and I stayed in Switzerland for 2 weeks, in all of the major cities. This restaurant is hands down the best one we were able to try. We loved it so much we went back again! The ravioli is the best ravioli I have ever had. The staff are very friendly and courteous (something that didn’t seem to be the norm in Switzerland, this place was more like Italy), and the atmosphere of this restaurant was beautiful as well. Also, the tiramisu was one of the top 3 I’ve ever had. I would highly recommend this place as an absolute must when visiting...
