the beauty of this place is not just in the comfort of the space but the entire experience from the moment you book a tour. I noticed the poster for their walking tour at Flip Flop Hostel in Taipei and decided at the last minute to join when i headed up to jiufen. despite the late booking, Saber was incredibly accommodating and welcomed me to join the walking tour.
find the cafe/meeting point was very easy with the detailed directional video she shared with me beforehand. i was glad i arrived earlier as she suggested for a coffee as she introduced me to a wide selection of fermented (?) coffee beans that had the wonderful fragrance of various fruits. i had the mango one, if you are choosing that, I'd highly recommend the hot version for the full aroma!
we had a lovely coversation about the books in the shop and spent a lovely few minutes reading a few of the picture books. we set off for our tour soon after.
I felt so blessed for the ability to book the tour in time, plus the amazing weather. Saber shared the story of Jiufen and its somethings you should experience for yourself so i won't spoil it too much. i appreciated that she shared the story of Jiufen from her eyes, and felt a complicated sense of awe at how this small piece of land has been marred but also built from human desires and ambition. It was a beautiful journey that traced the rich and dynamic story of taiwan in one single island, and I'd highly recommend this to you on your next visit to Jiufen to truly see it beyond just the alleys and tea houses. instead, i left jiufen thinking about the people that discovered, lived, left and rebuilt this beautiful island that continues to thrive today.
...and that mountain!!!! a whole mountain, gone!!!!!!!
thank...
