A Timeless Taste of Taiwan Sometimes the best discoveries are made on a bustling street corner, in a spot that looks like it has been a local institution for decades. This unassuming Taiwanese eatery is a beautiful testament to that truth. Forget sleek, modern dining rooms; here, the charm lies in its no-frills setting and a quality of food that speaks for itself, so loudly that people are willing to wait hours just for a taste.

The scene on a weekday morning is a story in itself. Show up thirty minutes before opening, and you’ll likely find a small crowd already forming. The queue system is a charming, old-school touch: a paper pad with numbers that serves as the official sign of this place’s immense popularity. It’s a clear warning and a promise: come early, or risk missing out. By noon, many of their best-loved dishes are completely sold out, a testament to just how beloved this spot is by locals and foodies alike.

The Food: Every Dish a Winner Every single dish here is a masterpiece of authentic Taiwanese cooking. The soy-marinated pork belly is an absolute highlight, a dish so rich and flavorful that it will haunt your memory long after the last bite. It’s braised to an impossibly tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture that makes you want to immediately order another plate.

Equally divine is the classic braised pork rice, a comforting bowl of perfectly steamed rice crowned with a velvety, rich sauce. It’s the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out. For a taste of the quintessential "Taiwan burger," the pork belly bao is an absolute must-try. Its pillowy-soft bun cradles the same delectable, savory pork, creating a handheld delight that’s both satisfying and utterly delicious. To round out the meal, the fish ball soup offers a light, clear broth with wonderfully bouncy fish balls, a perfect counterpoint to the richness of the other dishes.

The prices are so wonderfully low that they practically encourage you to order everything on the menu, a temptation that is incredibly hard to resist. The combination of incredible quality and affordability makes this a place that offers some of the best value for money you will find anywhere.

Verdict This humble street-side eatery is an absolute must-visit. It’s not just a meal; it’s an authentic and delicious slice of Taiwanese food culture. The fresh, outstanding quality of every dish and the incredibly affordable prices make the long wait a small price to pay. Arrive early to secure your spot in the queue and get ready for a truly unforgettable and...

the fattiest and most tender piece of pork i’ve ever had for sure , the best kong rou fan i’ve ever had. the oil seeped into the warm bed of rice underneath, and the second you touched it , IT LITERALLY MELTED. like it was easier to cut through than melted butter and jelly; the spoon sank into the fat as if it was a single entity. despite that, there were also bits and chunks of leaner pork throughout, which made a good balance. the meat wasn’t overly saucy, so you could really appreciate the texture and flavour of the meat. the accompanying ingredients, like the cucumber and sauerkraut, were PERFECT with the heaviness of the oil. it was tangy, crunchy, and really refreshing.

the gua bao was also so delicious, and had the same fatty, melty chunk of pork sandwiched between a soft, pillowy, and slightly sweet bao bun. the sauerkraut was sour, the cilantro was sharp, the sauce of the meat made the bao a little bit soggy, but the most prominent of all was the peanut powder — it was earthy and some bites, where the powder had accumulated, were quite sweet. it all went so well with the star of the show, the pork.

the wagui wasn’t as stand-out-ish as the other dishes, but still quite yummy. it was like a firm and savoury jelly/pudding, sprinkled with some beans on top. i would have liked a bit more sauce so i could coat every bite, and also more chunks of meat because the taste of the pudding itself was a bit plain.

the ladies up front were really kind and stood up for their customers (e.g. when someone cut in line), and had a really soft and friendly tone with me 🙂 there is limited seating, but it’s surprisingly easy to get a spot so don’t worry about that . the tables were also...

You gotta try the gua bao!!!!!

What do you do when you suffer from jetlag and wake up at 5 am? You go and line up as #1 at a Michelin shop.

After reading the review, I know lining up is unavoidable. It just happens that we're up early and might as well go and line up. We were there at 8 30am and there was no lineup yet. There were alteady chairs and tables set up outside, so we took a seat and waited. Thanks to the uncle who seemed to be a returned customer, he went and got us the #1 sticker. We're so grateful for your help. 5mins later, the gang arrived, and everyone was well aware that they needed to get a sticker (a number). Everyone got their seats and waited patiently for the shop to open at 9am. When it's time, the lady would call out and ask that everyone (one person per group) line up and order .

The pork belly amazed us by its tenderness. It melts in your mouth! The sides (cucumber and others) were paired to ease the fatness of the pork belly. So that you would have a freshness throughout the entire bowl. The gua gao is another level. You would assume that it's gonna taste the same as the pork belly rice but in a bun but no. Gua bao has a pinch of crushed peanuts inside to give it a bit of sweetness to ease the fat. How smart is that!? Omg, I would line up for this gua bao! They definitely deserve the...

Yi Jia Zi in Taipei is a must-visit for any foodie seeking authentic Taiwanese flavors. This Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient truly lives up to its reputation, serving up some of the most delicious gua bao (Taiwanese pork belly buns) and braised pork rice I've ever had. Let's start with the gua bao. The fluffy steamed bun cradled a generous slab of melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly, perfectly balanced with the sweetness of peanut powder, the freshness of cilantro, and the tanginess of pickled vegetables. It was a symphony of flavors and textures that left me craving more. The braised pork rice was equally impressive. The glistening pork belly, slow-cooked to perfection, was tender and flavorful, pairing beautifully with the fragrant rice. The addition of pickled cucumber and braised tofu added depth and complexity to the dish. While the food was undoubtedly the star of the show, be prepared for a wait. The popularity of Yi Jia Zi means that lines are often long, especially during peak hours. However, trust me, it's worth it. The friendly staff and the tantalizing aroma wafting from the kitchen make the wait more bearable.
