A friend invited me to a dinner at this private kitchen just before Lunar New Year.
This restaurant is tucked along a quiet street in Daan. It has an inconspicuous front. We pressed a bell and green gate opened leading to an immaculate patio/garden of beautifully nurtured plants. As we entered the main building, we were asked to remove our shoes snd be replaced with a pair of house slippers. That's typically what one has to do as you enter an Asian home. We don't wear our shoes in our house.
We're seated at an oblong table, set out with both forks and spoons and a pair of chopsticks with a ceramic spoon. So I'm expecting a feast of Asian snd Western cuisines.
Our ( group of 8) dinner began at 7pm as scheduled. Our first course was interesting, we're so excited with catching up with each other , I wasn't really paying much attention to the ingredients, but the starter was flavourful and delicately prepared and presented. The dishes that followed were prepared with the same intensity of attention and passion. I couldn't speak Chinese too well so I couldn't ask about their food or their visions and passion. From what I've tasted - they were elevating traditional Taiwanese cuisine to a fine-dining level; for e.g. there's this mee-sua served with lightly seared chicken thigh in sesame oil served with beetroot broth. The flavour was delicate without being over powered by sesame oil.
Every dish was delicately flavourful. I truly enjoyed my dinner. Each serving was just nice, wasn't too much or too tiny. Everyone of us cleared our plates and we were nodding as we ate and muttering " Hmmm, yummmm, very good"
Had a chance to chat with one of the two chefs. I was curious where they went for their culinary training as their cooking skills were magnificent. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they didn't go to school for their cooking skills, it was purely built from experience, passion and years and years of practice.
I have had many dinners in my years of travel, this meal by far, was one of the very best. Thank you for this sumptuous meal and a wonderful...
