A Disheartening Experience at Shin Yeh Mitsukoshi: A Review
As a tourist visiting Taiwan, I had eagerly planned my last day to include a dining experience at Shin Yeh Mitsukoshi, located in the bustling Xinyi Place district. With high hopes and a deep desire to savor authentic Taiwanese cuisine, I arrived at the restaurant at 13:45, only to be met with a disappointing encounter that left me disheartened.
Having checked the restaurant's official website prior to my visit, I was well aware of their stated closing time for accepting orders at 13:50, with business hours extending until 14:30. However, to my dismay, upon my arrival, I was informed by the responsible staff that the chefs had already finished their shifts and were no longer able to serve me.
The sudden turn of events ignited a range of emotions within me, as I had been eagerly looking forward to sampling the flavors and experiencing the culinary delights of Taiwanese cuisine. It was disheartening to realize that my anticipation and excitement were met with an abrupt and unwelcome end.
As a foreign visitor, my desire to explore and immerse myself in the local culture included indulging in authentic Taiwanese cuisine. The opportunity to taste the flavors and culinary traditions of a foreign land is not only a gastronomic adventure but also an avenue for cultural exchange and understanding. This longing to experience the essence of Taiwanese cuisine was met with disappointment and a feeling of missed opportunity.
While I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise in any establishment, it is disheartening when a restaurant fails to meet the expectations set by its own stated operating hours. As a tourist, my time in Taiwan was limited, and the chance to taste Taiwanese dishes at Shin Yeh Mitsukoshi was an important part of my itinerary. The inability of the restaurant to accommodate my arrival within their specified time frame left me with a sense of missed connection with the local culinary scene.
In conclusion, my experience at Shin Yeh Mitsukoshi in Xinyi Place was far from satisfactory. The unfulfilled promise of indulging in Taiwanese cuisine, coupled with the disappointment of being turned away due to the early departure of the chefs, left me feeling disheartened and unfulfilled. As a foreign visitor, the desire to taste and appreciate the local flavors is an integral part of the travel experience, and it is regrettable when such opportunities are missed due to miscommunication or unforeseen circumstances.
I sincerely hope that Shin Yeh Mitsukoshi will take this feedback constructively, ensuring that future patrons are not left with a similar sense of disappointment. By upholding their stated operating hours and providing a consistent dining experience, the restaurant can continue to showcase the rich tapestry of Taiwanese cuisine and create lasting memories for both local and...
Read moreI’ve tried this restaurant twice during my recent Taiwan trip so I will consolidate both experiences for this review.
Overall, Shin Yeh has great Taiwanese food with its Chinese banquet setting, but do not expect fast serving times. Expect well-cooked food in a possibly crowded and noisy atmosphere. Thus, service can tend to be slow especially during peak hours.
Stir-fried pork ribs with black Chinese dates - 4/5, it’s like sweet and sour pork style but they used dates instead of tomatoes. It’s delicious and our kid loved eating it. Enough said.
Stir-fried scallops with black bean sauce - 4/5, this was also delicious. Not too salty, just right. Scallops weren’t overcooked. The green onions added a crunch texture in contrast to the tender meat of the scallops. Loved it!
Pork stomach and preserved mustard greens clear soup/Chicken and mushroom clear soup - 4/5, will bundle this together because they’re practically the same. Simple yet delicious clear soup.
Braised pork belly rice - 5/5, for only 150NT you get to try one of Taiwan’s signature dishes. Generous portions of rice, melt-in-your-mouth pork and preserved veggies. The pork fats have become so sweet. I would order this again next time. Ko
Golden fried cuttlefish balls - 2/5, you can really taste the cuttlefish meat but for 375 NT, these balls were so expensive and they come only in 5 pieces. These come with some powdered white pepper (and probably other spices) similar to a chicken chop’s seasoning. I’d recommend order the braised pork belly instead!
Pan-fried oyster scrambled eggs - 4/5, oyster pancakes are yummy! Try it if you haven’t. I also absolutely love the chili sauce that comes with it. Not too spicy with a hint of sweetness; which compliments the strong flavors of the oysters.
Braised Taro with Pork Ribs - 3.5/5, it’s like coated pork ribs braised in a taro sauce. This sauce had a consistency of soup (not gravy). This dish was okay. There are tastier pork dish you can order, but I prefer something clean and...
Read moreShin Yeh Taiwanese Cuisine - Our first dinner at Taipei. We were so tired from our long journey of KUL to BKK to HKG to TPE. Primarily due to the lack of sleep the night before; we had a hard time deciding what to eat. After some walking spring the Zhongshan station area, we came across this restaurant. It was well reviewed and Taiwanese cuisine, and located inside the Mitsukoshi Departmental store. We thought it could not be any worse.
It was a Saturday evening and lots of people, we had to wait for an hour. Luckily the food was worth the wait. It was delicious. Service was efficient and they even gave us free dessert, mocchi.
Later we realised Shin Yeh Taiwanese Cuisine Restaurant was recommended by the Michelin Guide. I think this is good place to start when you arrived in Taiwan as it give you a baseline to judge all the upcoming meals that you will be having in Taiwan.
