Summary
• Quality: Excellent Soup Dumplings, good but not outstanding Beef Noodle Soups. • Portions: Very large, be mindful to avoid waste. • Ambiance: Extremely hot and humid outside; sitting inside is more comfortable. • Service: Attentive and accommodating, especially with the provision of a fan. • Hygiene: Conditions might be unusual for some; keep this in mind.
Location and Ambiance The restaurant "Noodle Beef of the King" is located in a small alley near Taipei Main Station. With such a name, one has high expectations. The area is extremely hot and humid, which can be uncomfortable, especially for Europeans. Although it is cooler inside, we decided to sit outside. The staff kindly provided a fan to help us cool down.
Menu and Ordering Process A positive aspect of the restaurant is the English menu, which allowed us to order without any problems. This is particularly helpful for tourists who do not speak the local language.
Food and Taste We ordered the Soup Dumplings and the Beef Noodle Soup, including one spicy variant.
Soup Dumplings: These were excellent and met our expectations. Beef Noodle Soup: The soups were generally good, but the broth lacked intensity. The meat was somewhat tough, which detracted from the overall experience. Portions: The large portions are truly large, which is important to keep in mind to avoid waste.
Service The service was attentive and accommodating, particularly with the provision of the fan.
Hygienic Conditions It is important to note that the hygienic conditions in and around the restaurant might be considered unusual by some. This should be kept in mind when deciding to visit.
Conclusion The restaurant "Noodle Beef of the King" offers solid food quality with excellent Soup Dumplings and good, but not outstanding, Beef Noodle Soups. The large portions are impressive, but the ambiance and hygienic conditions might deter some guests. Overall, it is a good place to eat, but one should be aware of the heat and the...
Read moreGreat beef noodles tucked away in an alleyway. Seemed very busy when I went around 13:00, the place must be popular. I sat down and ordered the beef noodle, and my Taiwanese friend ordered the hot and sour soup. We also asked for some other side dishes - some tofu, vegetarian chicken, kombu, and pork chop.
First, the small beef noodles portion size was huge for around 240 NT. It was absolutely loaded with different kinds of tendon, which are my favorite. The noodles were textured and thick but not too thick, and the broth picked up nicely on them. I would have preferred the noodles a bit less cooked.
My friend seemed to enjoy the hot and sour soup, the dumplings in it were yummy.
The pork chop was okay, a little bit cold but with decent flavour The kombu was yummy and a little slick, and the vegetarian chicken was chewy. The marinated egg was okay as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to order these. It looked like there were some pickled vegetables nearby, I might try that next time.
It's nice to eat in a no-frills shop as a tourist in my opinion, it feels very authentic. Especially with the workers shouting across the shop 😄. Two japanese tourists sat down next to me and ordered the zhajiangmen, the uncle running the shop seemed very friendly to tourists. There is a japanese and english menu available. I definitely want to try the zhajiangmen next time, it looks incredible.
Edit: I went back for the zhajiangmen. I honestly think this is a better dish to highlight their noodles; you can taste the flavour of the noodles better and it's so delightful to taste a concentrated pork fat and garlic sauce. I added in some chili oil, mustard greens, and fermented black beans as well! Very nice cost-performance on this dish.
Overall, highly...
Read moreWe found this hole in the wall spot tucked away in a small alley as it was close to our hotel. My group speaks very limited Chinese and therefore ordered through picture. We ordered the beef noodle soup with tendon (note: the vegatables are communal and need to be added in yourself) and ordered a plate of egg/tofu (which we had to go up and point to which ones we wanted). After we received our food, we were rushed to pay upfront which totaled to 970 NT. The owner seemed to be chuckling, and gave us sense that we were overcharged.
After eating through and reassessing what we ordered, we called the staff back to recalculate together what they should’ve charged us - which was 700 NT. Our experience here wasn’t enjoyable and therefore went hand in hand with the food. The noodle soup itself was decent and nothing impeccable. Meat being tender is the extra star the spot will attain. This is definitely a locals spot so if you’re unable to communicate in Chinese well, i’d highly suggest...
