Did take out and went to the restaurant around 5pm, the time that it opens for business as listed on Google map. My 2nd visit recently. Both times it is filled with lots of Taiwanese locals and this time there is a constant line formed. The line moves very quickly though and based on the time stamp on my receipt, when I paid for my food a table of 3 people had already finished their food and vacated the restaurant. It is a very small place accommodating about 30-40 people at the dining area and for the rest of us doing take-outs, we paid and waited outside the restaurant for our food to be packed. It is not a place for you to sit/linger around but one to get a quick bite. Both times I ordered the food with the assistance of very helpful patrons. They recommended their favorite dishes to me which of course includes the chicken soup with clams. The restaurant apparently has a new menu and therefore does not have an English version yet. I ordered 1 油饭which has a 2 portions per person limit. I thought it is oil rendered from pork fats on rice which I had seen in Hong Kong but it turned out to be glutinous rice. Wanted to try the chicken soup with scallops but it was already listed as out of stock with a red sticker on the new menu. So went for the same clams option I had last time. Ordered bean sprouts for my veggie and opted for the oyster noodles since I had wanted to eat oysters but also the noodles. Both times the ladies/ customers who were assisting me with my orders kept trying to dissuade me from ordering too much food. This time I did just a minor adjustment of getting a oyster noodle vs a separate noodle and oyster dishes since I had already tried the spicy noodles that was raved about but I thought nothing of. It was definitely tasty but nothing to shout home about. The oysters were good but I kinda wish they were bigger. I literally finished all the food that I had bought…in fact halfway through my meal, I snapped a pic of everything but the noodle as I had attacked that immediately after I got back to my hotel room. It was a 2-3 min walk from the Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel to...
Read moreHad a lovely lunch here! It’s the original shop so it’s a little squeezy and getting a table for a bigger group can be difficult.
We got there around 1.30pm and queued till slightly before 2pm. Their lunch break starts officially at 2.30 so if you’re not seated by 2, they state that they’ll pack your order to go. The lady managing the queue was really nice and gave great recommendations for what to order. She also gave us tea as it was a cold day and we were queueing out on the sidewalk.
The food was amazing… I’m not much of a sesame sauce noodle-appreciator but damn it was GOOD. Had me thinking about it the subsequent days. There’s a little bit of chili and pepper so it was really yummy. The oysters were also amazing. Super sweet and the sauce complemented them. My boyfriend who doesn’t like oysters said they were pretty good.
For the soups, we got 3 kinds - clam, green peppers, garlic. All were chicken-based. My parents enjoyed the green pepper one the most as it had mild spicy flavour. I personally enjoyed the clam one the most. The ginger in the soup was nice and heartwarming.
For the braises, I wasn’t too impressed. Maybe cos I’m used to the flavours in Singapore. But my parents really enjoyed the pig skin. I ate the tau pok (豆卜?) and found that I enjoyed it more with the ginger strips.
Definitely a must go - if not this branch, go to the newer one which is supposedly bigger and...
Read moreWith no doubt, the Green Pepper Chicken Leg Soup was my most favourite dish of my Taiwan trip. Absolutely delicious with depth of flavour - the savouriness of the chicken essence, the sweetness from the cabbages, and the green peppers were mind-blowingly good, with a bit of a spicy kick from it. Simply fantastic, I slurped up the entire bowl.
And not to scoff at the other dishes as well! The "Must Order" Love-Hate Pepper Noodles was a pretty good rendition of sesame sauce noodles with a spicy-peppery afternote. We also enjoyed the glutinous rice and chinese cabbages, and the pork cartilage and tofu were braised in an addictive sweet-savoury light sauce.
If I was forced to give some criticism, it would be that the queue and ordering system was a bit confusing to navigate (i ordered 2 separate times and it took some time explaining to the staff that both orders were for me) and that you would most likely have to share the table with strangers with only a clear plastic divider between. Otherwise, with the entire meal being only 460NTD, this would definitely be a Must Visit for my next...
