Read moreMy partner and I recently enjoyed a delightful dining experience at Praya Dining. We booked a two-person set menu for 1,700 baht, excluding service charge and tax. To reach the restaurant via public transportation, you can take a ferry from Tha Pra A Thit near Khao San Road. For those arriving by car, there is parking available at a temple on Soi Sam Sen 9. Upon arrival at the pier, a hotel representative promptly arranged for a boat to pick us up, which took approximately 10 minutes. The subsequent 10-minute boat ride provided a scenic view of the river.
On the day of our visit, Bangkok's air quality was decent with a cool breeze. The staff, both on the boat and at the restaurant, were exceptionally polite and attentive, reflecting the elegant ambiance of the old Thai noble house.
For our meal, we selected two curries: 'Crab curry with Piper Sarmentosum' and 'Spicy roasted duck curry'. We also ordered 'Grilled seabass salad'. For dessert, we chose 'Som Chun'. Every dish was delicious and authentic, with well-balanced flavors. While the crab curry might not have been as fiery as a traditional southern Thai version, it was still very satisfying. The roasted duck curry was rich and flavorful, typical of central Thai cuisine. The salad was refreshing and spicy, especially when paired with the Piper Sarmentosum. Surprisingly, we both enjoyed the dessert, which as a sweet fruit with peanuts and kaffir lime zest. The combination of sweetness and citrus oil was refreshing and delightful.
We were so full that we had to take some food home. Considering a two-person meal of this quality with the included 20-total-minute river boat ride, I believe the price was very reasonable. We were extremely impressed by the...
Read moreDisappointed to say the least. This was my third night at a Michelin star Resturant in Bangkok and it was by far the worst. To start the website advertises the Resturant “guides guests through the history of Thai cuisine, from the ancient Kingdom of Sukhothai until now”. When we arrived we learned it was an a la cart menu and had to order by the item. The prices are good (280-380 bht), but the portions are so large that you can’t sample a dish from every time period. This Resturant would do much better as a tasting menu serving small dishes from every time period. The waiter spoke decent English which was also surprising because they were unable or unwilling to give any guidance or explanation about the dishes we were eating and that was the main draw of the Resturant. To make matters worse, getting to the Resturant was no easy task. We were told to meet at a pier to get a boat to the hotel but when we arrived the pier was closed which the hotel seemed surprised by this. They made us wait 15 minutes until someone came to get us and then they walked us through what I can only describe as a Thai ghetto that is located next to the hotel. We were walking through peoples open aired living rooms as they shuffled us to the Resturant. It was a very strange customer service experience for a 5 star hotels/Resturants management to choose for us. It just added to the disappointment of the whole experience. Undeniably the food was good and one can see that they have a star from elevating traditional Thai dishes. But it’s also possible there standards have slipped and they are no longer as good as they once we’re. I don’t think I would return to Praya on...
