Avoid this place, and ignore the people who recommend it -- anyone giving this restaurant four stars has no business providing advice to other diners.
The food at Roti-Mataba would rate as mediocre in any cuisine, and is a downright insult to Indo-Malay food.
We've eaten at Roti-Mataba a couple of times over the last five years, most recently toward the end of a month-long trip including Singapore (Little India) and George Town, Malaysia (Little India, again). Roti-Mataba simply does not measure up.
The three curries we had there in July 2016 were characterless, boring and undifferentiated. The rice: over-boiled jasmine. Samosas, wrapped sausage and 'martaba' (murtabak) lacked flavour and the pastry was the sort of sad failure one gets in frozen packs at supermarkets. As for the roti, it was greasy and bland.
Lonely Planet should be ashamed of themselves for keeping this place in their guides when so many better local restaurants go unmentioned.
While we have no ill-will toward the restaurant as such, the simple fact is that most foreign travellers spend a lot of money to get here and therefore have only limited time and funds for meals. For these visitors, a meal at Roti-Mataba means a wasted opportunity to try something excellent at a restaurant that hasn't given...
Read moreONE OF THE BEST INDIAN FOOD IN BANGKOK!?
I don’t know many Indian places here in Bangkok as I don’t crave it very often but dude, I know one good place my friend took me there many years back. He said, it’s one of the best Indian food in Bangkok..
A place just very close to ‘Khaosan Road‘, one of the very popular spots for nightlife in Bangkok. This place called ‘Karim Roti Mataba‘, a family owned business that’s been open for generations.
There’s a second floor with air-conditioning which is great as really, even it’s winter in Thailand, it’s hot still!
‘Kurma’ with mutton (They have many choices but we went for this one as it’s pretty rare in Thailand) and you will have to order plain roti / naan separately to eat with it. It’s really just umami! The deliciousness you can’t explain how delicious it is. Like, really! This is my most favourite out of all three we got.The texture of this homemade naan is super duper as well. It’s kinda crispy outside but inside just soft and firm.
if you ever come by Bangkok and crave some Indian food, some (one of) the best Indian food in Bangkok.. 😀 Karim is totally a place I recommend you come check out ! Very Delicious and...
Read moreUnpretentious place. Upstairs air-con. All the curries have chicken or beef in them. Zero for vegetarians except 'vegetable mataba' which consisted of cooked salad (lettuce & tomatoes) but mostly tofu. What's more, unlike the fleshfood matabas, which appeared both upon inspection in the place and in the photos, appeared to be baked, whereas this vegetable one - well, I thi k it couldn't really be classified as a mataba at all. The wheaten part was soft and wet.
I wanted to order the standard roti chennai that I recognised as the normal breakfast in Malaysia, but again - not veg dipping sauce.
Either the staff ten years ago did not understand what vegetarian (mamgsavirat) means or they lied to me. In the past I had numerous rotis here with curry. Now I know I was fooled. The current manager and staff are straightforward.
I liked the vinegar with chili on the side. So just a snack of six bites, and I...
