On suggestion of a friend, we came to Ninja Ramen to have a lunch. As I started writing this review, I should note that our extensive eating experience in Japan has probably set our standards relatively high, before we stepped into this particular ramen shop in Chiang Mai.
We ordered large-sized soba noodles in pork soup with fried pork on the side, and curry rice with fried shrimp, using non-Japanese terms. Both meals tasted fine; they may rank three stars if they were served in Japan; but this is in Chiang Mai so should be especially appreciated.
The portion of the soba noodles is interesting, characterized by a limited physical quantity optically magnified by the gigantic bowl. Unsure, I asked the waitress whether their large refers to the size of the bowl or the amount of the noodles, as I dug deeper into the bowl in search for the soba noodles, but was told it’s indeed large-sized weighing 150 grams. I think the cook subsequently compensated us by giving us an unusually large portion of white rice in the curry rice meal. The curry rice arrived like over 15 minutes after the noodles had been served, possibly as a gentle way of punishment for our questioning the size of the noodles. However, we did notice guests who ordered minutes after us were served before our curry rice meal was delivered. But that’s okay.
The fried pork and shrimps contain a generous amount of fried dough so they tasted doughy, with the protein therein dominated by carbs — this appeared to be different from the cooking technique as seen in similar food we had in Japan.
Overall, the meals were okay for a quick lunch although for some reason, we came to the conclusion that we should eat Japanese food only in Japan...
Read moreThis is a Japanese restaurant that focuses on making delicious Ramen. It looks small but there are plenty of seats inside. Other from Ramen they serve Curry rice, Katsu-don, Tonkatsu, sushi and other Japanese food.
Average waiting time for food : 10-15 Minutes ( Quite fast for a restaurant full of customers )
My Recommendation : Ramen and Ikura (Salmon roe)
How to order food : After you pick your table. The waiter will give you a Menu. Then they will give you a plate and chopstick. 5 minutes later or when you’re ready the waiter will take your order. The Ramen has 3 size ( small, medium , large) with an option to add more pork and ingredients ( need to pay for the add on). For other food you need to pick whether you want just the food or a food set.
Food Price : Average ( Food price starting at 100 baht )
Paying Method : Thai baht ( Cash ) / not sure if they accept credit card
Parking : You can park your car in the alley near the restaurant but I don’t recommend bringing your car because the parking space is always full in this zone of the town. For motorcycle you can park in the alley before the restaurant which is mostly available.
Frequently asked question Is there a toilet available? : Yes Is there a time limit ? : No Free wifi ? : Not sure
My Experience 06.07.18 at Ninja Ramen
This is my 1st time eating at this restaurant with my friends. We order 3 types of Ramen which Tonkotsu Ramen (Salt-based) , Shoyu Ramen (Soy sauce-based) and Tonkotsu Ramen (Pork bone-based). I’m not sure about the Ramen types though but I’m sure that we all go for the Large size. Other than Ramen we had Curry rice , Ikura (Salmon roe) , crab sushi and Takoyaki. The food...

I had spicy soybean ramen, octopus sashimi. When you order Ramen here, be careful of the portion. You have to choose small, medium, and large, which makes you choose the medium most of the time. The medium size is actually a big portion. You are paying extra.
I would suggest going with the small size if you are not a big eater and do not add extra chachu pork. You are ordering extea. It is a sly tactic to make you spend more money :-)
If you see the photo I uploaded, you will see that I could not finish and compare it with our hand to see the portion. Just go with the small size and do not order anything extra unless you are extra hungry.
The soup was wonderful. I traveled and stayed in Japan multiple times. This place's ramen - the soup is near perfect. The noodle itself needs some improvement.
My wife ordered a tempura udon. I advise you to avoid this. The big portion and the tempura are not good at all.
However, do not make a mistake! It would be hard to find a better Japanese ramen (nothing else) place than this...
