For anyone in Chiang Mai seeking high-quality sushi that's fresh and far from the dubious, sun-bathed offerings we've all encountered, this is the place. The Tataki Sashimi is an absolute must-try; it's clear the chefs here know their craft.
The miso soup served was both hot and flavorful, a comforting start to the meal. I appreciated the abundant, authentic ginger provided – none of that pink, cheap stuff here. I ventured to try the Chef’s Special Roll 64, a mixed seafood creation. While personally, I found it to be a bit heavy on the rice for my liking, it's a substantial option for those in search of a more filling roll.
My only regret during this visit was dining alone, as it meant I couldn’t indulge in a bottle of their unfiltered Sake, which I’ve heard is exceptional. This visit has only whetted my appetite to explore more of their menu. I'm particularly intrigued to see how this chef tackles dishes outside the sushi realm, like their fried chicken and Khao Soi. Given the quality and care evident in their sushi and Thai offerings, I'm excited to return and sample more of their culinary prowess, hopefully with company next time to fully experience everything they have to offer. Definitely a spot worth visiting for anyone craving authentic and high-quality Japanese and Thai dishes in Chiang Mai.
For those interested, the ambiance was enhanced by the soft jazz playing throughout the meal, creating a thoroughly enjoyable atmosphere. Additionally, credit cards are accepted with a standard 3% charge, and for larger dining parties, a 10% gratuity is automatically added.
Ps. They also have a daytime coffee bar, serving chilled Thai...
Read moreI've been in CM for just under 6 months on this particular trip here and have eaten in numerous Japanese restaurants many many times as I love the cuisine. I have been to The Real many times and both the restaurant atmosphere, the staff and the food are all really very nice.
The other day I tried the Spicy Prawn Salad Roll and the Spicy Shrimp Tempura and Asparagus Roll. I was really blown away by the level of sophistication in the creation of these rolls.....the balance of and variety of subtle flavors, all presented in a manner that allowed a sort of harmonious symphony or culinary painting to play out in the mouth. Normally I will put wasabi in soya sauce and dip sushi rolls in, but in this case the sushi rolls were so perfectly balanced that doing so detracted from the culinary experience and was just delightfully unnecessary. Even the tempura used in one of the rolls...it was so perfect in both taste and texture....absolutely 5 star.
I'm 46 and have eaten a lot of sushi in my life all over the world and this is place is excellent. The ingredients used are high quality and I feel he has the best salmon of all the CM restaurants I have eaten at and up there with the best I've tried in any...
Read moreThe staff here are really nice and caring as people mention, and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying everything. And the place feels very down to earth - which means the atmosphere doesn't really have anything that makes it stand out.
The food is about 2x-4x more expensive than other restaurants around though, and they add a 10% which I didn't see anyone else doing. All this is fine, but I didn't really feel like the value was there to warrant the price.
I'm surprised about all the other purely 5 star reviews as I think it's a solid 4/5.
The bento box for lunch is probably you're best bet for a lunch special.
I also have to asterisk this review, with the fact that this is the only sushi I tried in Thailand, so perhaps there isn't great sushi around and this one...
