Still on our 60 day food safari of authentic Thai food in Bangkok and Phuket, now at Kamala Beach in Phuket.
Our new local, Lillo Island restaurant is right on the beach. The Meet and Greet is Suay, and she is helpful, hard working and is great with languages. She never stops.
We've had two meals there already. Today we had pomelo salad with prawns, and Tom yum goong, the milk version. Two nights ago we had fish with Thai spicy herbs.
Everything we've had had been flavourful, correctly spiced, generous, with each meal being a 9/10 or better.
The tom yum was among the best we've ever had, so rich, and quite spicy, but not too much, with perfect balance. Even better than Jeh O Chula in Bangkok, and that had 100 people lined up for their tom yum when we visited. Lillo Island is a hands down 10/10 for their tom yum goong. Just make sure you order Thai spicy, not western spicy.
There is an extensive menu of western and Thai dishes, quite a few with a southern Thai influence.
Last night we had also went for a nightcap there right on the beach. Perfect!
Beware it's very popular, and sometimes there's a wait, but the location, food, and value for money make it worth it. We'll be back more than once in the coming week.
We went back several times, and now after three years we are back again. Same superb food. Same wonderful Suay.
The special menu is great. We especially loved the (not too) spicy dipping sauce with deep-fried melingo and betel leaves. Superb balance and flavour. A bit messy to eat, but that's part of the fun.
Sunset drinks on the sand are epic. Just ask and they will...
Read moreWe came here for a quick snack after arriving to Phuket and we kept coming back every day for every meal. The portions are very generous, prices are ok, food is nice and freshly made. Maybe you won't eat the best curry of your life in here, especially after visiting many restaurants in Bangkok, but everything we ordered here made us happy. The place is located by the beach, and you can even ask to be seated on the table placed on the sand and have your meal with the view on the sea. It's especially pleasing to come here for dinner because restaurant gets full and you're surrounded by happy people and chatter. I think what makes this place though is the staff. Everyone is soo friendly and even in the rush hours they are in control of the situation, overlooking the room to see if every guest has everything they need. Every waiter and waitress here was smiling and creating a good vibe that made us want to come back again and again. You could see that they are a well integrated team that likes to work together and even if they were stressed you couldn't guess it. I'm a type of person who gets easily affected by the staff in the restaurants and when someone is rude my mood and meal is ruined. In Lillo Island I was always taken care of and I could enjoy...
Read moreThe location of this restaurant is great for watching the sunset. Seating is reasonably comfortable. We walked quite a long way to try this restaurant because of its reviews but when the food came, the first dish was good and then.we get even.more disappointed with the rest of the 3 dishes that came along. We order clams and a big fish to grill from the seafood selection. We also order a fried vegetable. The vegetable is a no fail dish and so no disappointment but when the clams came, they were over cooked and the sauce totally over powered the taste of the clams. We cannot taste the clams at all. Then we waited in anticipation of the fish we ordered. When it came , we were excited and we began to dig in.... there was no taste of fish to be talked about. The taste was flat and it is also fishy. Guess the fish must have been frozen and defrosted a couple of times that's why it is so absolutely tasteless and fishy. We started with that mouthful and ended there as well. We rather let that almost 600bht fish go without eating it. It is not that we are snobbish just that it would dampen our mood the more we eat it. So we asked for the...
