I never have publicly posted a negative review online - but both the food and service were just absolutely terrible I had to write to let others know this place is not worth a visit.

The dining experience focuses on the combination of local Thai ingredients and herbs into a visual presentation, each dish is depicted as a painting in the menu like an art gallery brochure. Yes, the decors and creativity were impressive and picturesque.

However the complexity of taste was merely overwhelming and there were too many elements in every dish which were not balancing nor harmonising into a distinct taste. The flavours were just all over the place. The whole experience was aesthetically satisfying, but did not please the palate. Out of the 22 course we had to skip more than 10 dishes. I guess ‘innovation’ and ‘experimental’ are two easy words to use as an excuse when things are simply not up to standard.

Unfortunately the food is not the only reason of our dissatisfaction. The course was indeed disappointing but I could easily accept this as an experience without being condemning of other’s view. The highlight was when the staff came and asked if there was ‘anything wrong’ since we were leaving some food behind. Because I didn’t want to comment too much, I simply said the spices and ingredients in some dishes were not suiting to our taste. I was surprised when she immediately asked back “do you want me to ask the kitchen to stop your course?”, while seemingly offended by my comment.

I still don’t see the point in her question - At that point we were not even close to the main course, and she further added whether we stop the course or not the bill will remain the same.

So why did she even ask such question? If you don’t like our food then just walk away and leave?

I was quite stunned at her question and attitude, and without giving me a chance to answer she then continued to say “well it is only a few dishes until your main course”, and walked off! I have visited 40+ michelin starred restaurants in my life and never have experienced such terrible guest service before.

Including 10% ‘service charge’, the dinner cost us around 7500++ THB per person which is equivalent to around $300 USD. This experience and the food cannot justify such exorbitant price.

Would only recommend to people who are willing to spend $$$ to take instagrammable food pics, but on a diet. There are so many other michelin starred restaurants in Bangkok which live up to...

Ordered the 6-course dinner. Over-rated (and therefore overpriced for the quality and the experience) and a disappointment. Experimental to the point of losing focus. Trying too hard? So many dishes had no balance, with either one ingredient or a sauce overwhelming the main highlight of the dish. In particular, tasted nothing but the sauce for pig’s head. Execution of the dishes were questionable. Sturgeon was overcooked, and likewise overwhelmed by all the toppings and sauce. Duck was a disappointment. My portion was slightly undercooked - hard to cut or chew through. My dinner date could not finish her potion and passed me hers. It was done just nice but lo and behold, there were sinews.

Good part of the dinner? The glass-canned sake. But realised that not much effort was needed from the restaurant. It just needed to be served chilled from the fridge and drunk from the can itself. The dessert was not bad but I suppose the supplier of the freeze-dried mangosteen deserved most of the credit. Oh, but I forgot the dessert was supposed to be about the purple yam and not the freeze-dried mangosteen! Anything else? Maybe the prettiness of the dishes - highly instagrammable I would say. But unfortunately that just raises the expectations of the taste, which are sadly not met.

I would have given 3 stars if this were not a 1 Michelin star restaurant, of which one would expect a better standard. Felt defrauded.

Tried a 2 Michelin star restaurant and a Michelin plate restaurant during this trip and they definitely lived up to their billing. Thanks to them they more than made up for this...

A Gastronomic Wonderland

Walking into Canvas feels less like entering a restaurant and more like stepping into a surrealist dream—a portal to a world where art and cuisine collide. This was not just dinner; it was an extraordinary journey, akin to tumbling down the rabbit hole and finding Picasso himself at the stove.

The multi-course tasting menu was a symphony of flavors and textures that seemed to defy the laws of culinary physics. Each dish was a masterpiece, not only in taste but in presentation, with colors and forms that mirrored the artwork adorning the walls. The chef’s creative vision is beyond belief; he’s not just cooking food—he’s painting emotions on a plate. A dish of vibrant vegetables and delicate flowers felt like eating the essence of spring, while a dessert that danced between smoky and sweet tasted like the last notes of a jazz ballad at midnight.

The staff deserves their own spotlight. Sweet, attentive, and radiating warmth, they made us feel like the heroes of this whimsical story. Their knowledge of each dish and its inspiration added layers to the experience, like reading footnotes in an extraordinary novel.

By the time the meal ended, I felt like I’d traveled through Wonderland itself, led by the Mad Hatter of haute cuisine. This is not just a restaurant; it’s an artistic revolution. Canvas is a must-visit for anyone seeking to eat with their eyes, taste with their heart, and leave with their soul enriched.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If Picasso painted with flavors instead of oils, Canvas would be his greatest...

Mediocre food. Gimmicky menu. Pretentious Cuisine. We were not able to finish the set and chose to settle the bill to leave early. 1) The food tastes bad. The first rule of good cuisine is good food. None of the dishes tasted like good food. 2) The dishes were designed for their shocking, provocative, childish visuals rather than their taste. Everything felt gimmicky and most of the plated tasted too bad to be eaten: i) pineapple cooked for 30 days looks and tastes like charcoal; ii) small, unpeeled, and deep fried shrimps are not good; iii) a dish with 'fifty' secret ingredients including (!) raw Okra tasted like a garbage dump; iv) the charred undercooked octopus was inedible; v) and everything was way too salty. ALLERGY ALERT: I opted out of the highly allergenic water bug dish but developed a large rash due to one of the other 'secret' ingredients I ate. The menu is not transparent. 3) This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The mind behind this nightmarish experience lacks fundamentals of cooking and chooses instead to make up rules for a craft that they never learned. It is also priced significantly more than other restaurants that do offer great food (this is your kid's drawing outselling a Picasso). Canvas cannot compete with the amazing street food of Bangkok. Sraa Bua, Le Du, and Gaa are better fine dining establishments. Spend your time elsewhere and you will have a much better experience.

Every Course a Plate of Art. That is the best description i can think of Chef Riley’s creations. We went through 22 course of art on the plate with tent cards showing the actual art drawn on canvas. Not only were the dishes plated like art, the quality and tastes were also as fantastic as the art and plating. We spoke to Chef Riley who told us he was inspired during the Covid lockdown to start painting art and all these art were painted by him personally during the months of lockdown. Then he was inspired to create new dishes based on all the art he drawn. There was the course made out of 50 different types of vegetables all found in Thailand, the tomyum course made out of raw, cooked shrimps with sauces beautifully plated and many others. The service was really good, with happy staff that were willing to go beyond their usual service. I ordered something online but it has to be paid through line app. As a tourist, i do not have any credits in my line app, so i asked the staff to help. She willingly offered to pay using her credits while i return to her in cash, and went to receive it for me outside the restaurant from the delivery man while we were dining. The toilet is clean.

Canvas, located at 113/9-10 Sukhumvit Soi 55 in Bangkok’s lively Thonglor area, is a remarkable dining experience that fully earns its Michelin star. Chef Riley Sanders and his team transform Thailand’s local, seasonal ingredients into innovative dishes that feel both artistic and approachable. The two-story space is intimate and modern, with counter seats offering a front-row view of the open kitchen—a treat for anyone who enjoys watching culinary precision in action. The tasting menu (around THB 4,500++ for 18 courses) is a highlight, featuring creative takes like toasted rice bread with salted egg yolk or tender mud crab with unexpected flavor pairings. Each dish tells a story of its origins, from farms in Khao Yai to coastal provinces, blending Thai roots with global techniques. Service is friendly and attentive, with the staff happy to explain the inspiration behind every course. The wine pairing option elevates the meal further, though it’s not cheap. Reservations are a must, as the small space fills up fast. Canvas isn’t just a meal—it’s a celebration of Thailand’s bounty, reimagined with flair. Perfect for food enthusiasts looking for something unique in Bangkok!
