We live in Chiang Mai, but we've been admiring this place from afar for almost a year. Finally, we had a chance to stop in and we walked away with half the menu.
First of all, you can absolutely taste the love in this food. Spencer and Mrs. Salt are running a fine establishment that deserves the attention. More than that, it felt like I had been invited to their home for a special meal. I felt totally welcome and my soul felt it.
My search for good pastrami in Thailand has finally come to an end. That first bite was heaven on a fork. It was perfect and every piece was seasoned perfectly and tender. Watch out Langer's!
We ordered The Legend chicken sandwich, which may just be the best deli chicken sandwich I've ever ordered. Definitely a sandwich whose sum is greater than its parts. The people of Pattaya don't realize how lucky they are to have this as a lunch option every day.
We also had the New Yorker lox and schmear on an everything bagel and it was everything I needed it to be, even down to the capers. It was perfection.
The Mermaid Nosh was another spectacular sandwich. Sea bass with the most perfect tartar sauce on delicious homemade bread. (We couldn't finish all this food, but don't worry, they were packaged for take-away and will not be wasted).
There's so much more to say. The matzo ball soup was a warm hug in liquid form. The chopped liver was just like grandma used to make. The latkes were a beautiful golden brown and tasted fantastic, especially with that house-made apple puree. The coleslaw was fantastic. Not sugary, not wet, just the perfect flavor and consistency. The potato salad was fantastic with just the right bite from the red onions. The rye bread was perfect. Even the mustard was delicious.
We ended the meal with cheesecake a la mode with a fantastic raspberry/rose/lychee sauce and an espresso. We were so full, but how can you say no to cheesecake? Especially this cheesecake! Not too sweet or gooey. Just a perfectly textured cake with a perfect cup of coffee.
Will I come back? I hope so. Will I be ordering for delivery to Chiang Mai? I guarantee it. If you need a taste of home or just good food, this...
Read more4 visits, 4 complete failures. 1) stopped in to order a pastrami sandwich. Spencer says a week from Thursday (!) because we ship all over the world. Spends several minutes explaining. Fine. Understand your business now. So he talks me into a chicken sandwich, I say ok, but hey we don't have time to make it so we'll send you home with everything to make it yourself. I actually fell for that. 2) Ordered 12 bagels for pick up. Asked if I could get a pastrami sandwich. Sure, end of the week (again). Ok I'll try the salt beef. When can I pick up? Takes 1 1/2 hours for him to say "will confirm". So ultimately he says 2PM because "we're busy". 4 hrs for a sandwich and frozen bagels, lunchtime over. 3) Ordered 12 bagels. No problem, pick up in 30 minutes. Went there to pick up. Oops don't have 12, heres 10. Oops I mean 8. Sorry. 4) Ordered 12 bagels on Wed, happy to wait until tomorrow to get full dozen. Mrs. Salty says we bake on Friday. Ok I'll pick up Friday. Friday comes and goes. Saturday afternoon still not ready so I cancelled and state I will take my business elsewhere. No apology, only "thank you". 3 days wait for bagels when your business is literally named LONDON BEIGEL! I don't know how any of these reviewers ever managed to get food to review, I'm exhausted. Spencer is a nice guy but 100% lip service and nothing but excuses. Mrs Salty is lovely and her food is great. Enjoy it, if you can get it. Spencer will be standing at the front of the store explaining why they can't deliver anything you want, but here, taste this. Nice people with probably the most poorly run business I've ever seen. Try Peaky Blinders for a great sandwich and The Deli Factory for bagels. They are both fantastic with...
Read moreGo figure - an Ashkenazi Jewish ✡️ restaurant in Pattaya. I wouldn't call this a Jewish deli - certainly not like the ones they have in New York. My chicken 🐔 sandwich bagel 🥯 was very good though but really nothing to write home about. The matzo balls in the matzo ball soup 🍲 were light, fluffy, and delicious, but I wasn't crazy about which the how rich the broth was. I took home a gefilte fish 🦈 and it was hard the next day I ate it; maybe that was from my refrigerator. I didn't like it. Oh, their homemade beet horseradish that went with it is fabulous. They did give me a sample of the brisket one day - now this is too good and something to write home about, but I only had a sample. This is the problem with this place: you come here expecting one thing and wind-up with another. I came specifically for the brisket that day but got a pastrami sandwich instead. Not everything here is available every day. Well Spencer and his lovely wife - Mrs Salty - are friendly and try to be accommodating, but the bottom line is I couldn't get what I wanted when I wanted it. Spencer's smile can be infectious, but he can also be a bit pushy when it comes to fishing for compliments for the food here. He should just wait and see if they come on their own. Like I said though, he and his wife are very nice people. Mrs Salty said something to me that piqued my interest a bit. She told me that Spencer was her oxygen. I have thought about this as I have never heard anyone say this about someone else. I'm certain she meant it in a positive way, but I don't think I would ever say this about anybody else or would want anyone to say this about me - even a wife. Yet I feel jealous of Spencer for...
