Another find. I was in the area looking for another restaurant and couldn't find it, threw up my hands and started walking towards Rama IV when my stomach said stop, so I did. Its on the Map but only with a Thai name, and I still don't know what it is in English. Anyway, I walked in, there were a few folks there, no foreigners (this area is very local) no English was present verbally but the menu had English translations so I ordered. Ended up with Spicy Shrimp Salad with Glass Noodles and Sweet and Sour Fried Sea Bass. Awesome. The Spicy Shrimp Salad wasnt very spicy (to me) but extremely flavourful with sweet juicy shrimp and some tender squid (thats hard to do correctly and they did) and ground pork and whatever else. I gobbled that down, it was the BOMB! I think the Chef may have toned it down because I was a foreigner. That happens in local restaurants so if you haven't yet developed immunity to normal Thai spiciness, you will love this dish too. If you are a Thai level spicer like me, make sure you make hand motions and gestures and say "Spicy OK". The Sweet and Sour was superb, NOT that disgusting red/orange sauce you get out of jar in the US, but fresh Pineapple and Tomato based that accentuated the fried Sea Bass PERFECTLY. It was reasonably priced, easily $5 less than what you would pay for same in the tourist areas. The best is that the place is very clean, far cleaner than the usual local joint. Its family owned and I met the owners daughter (who is a Chef herself in a Michelin Star joint and spoke perfect American English) and her American English teacher Husband so I got the chance to have a real conversation in English (for the first time in like a month) and chat with cool people. I was told that the place is big at night with the local Thai drinking crowd and gets very busy later (I was there about 6:30) and that the Chef-owner has been cooking for 45 years. The menu is extensive and the owner is from Isaan so you can probably get stuff spiced up. They have Frog on the menu so you know its local. Next time I'm in that area I will be back for that, no sense in paying more in Chinatown. Central Bangkok Tourist wise its off the beaten path and folks may look at you as an oddity but everyone, as usual, is friendly and cool. However, If you are staying or visiting in the Hua Lamphong/Sam Yan area its easy to find. Get to Rama 4 road out of either of those stations, its halfway between the two on Banthat Tong Road, head North, 300 meters on the West side of Banthat Tong. In other words, make a right off Rama IV coming from MRT Sam Yan, left from Hua Lamphong.. If you are staying in that area, or just there for whatever reason, its worth a stop. Its 1/2 mile easy walk from Wat Hua Lamphong or from the Temple of the Golden Buddha, especially good if you are at either of those places and dont want to pay tourist prices!
