Somboon Seafood, a name that resonates with the essence of Thai culinary expertise, especially when it comes to their signature dish, the Thai fried curry crab. Originating this iconic dish, Somboon has set a benchmark for a delightful gastronomic experience. The Surawong branch, with its bustling ambiance, does justice to the fame, serving up this delectable creation that tantalizes the taste buds with its rich flavors and spices.
However, for the connoisseurs of the sea's bounty, the freshness of seafood is paramount. While the crabs and squid served are far from subpar, the discerning palate might catch the subtle notes of refrigeration, a slight deviation from the ocean's kiss. It's not a deal-breaker, though, as the overall quality remains within the realms of 'acceptable'. Contrast this with the experience at their National Stadium outlet, where the seafood's freshness seems to leap from the ocean to the plate, and you have a tale of two branches.
The menu does offer redemption with its fresh and sizable cockles and the oyster omelette, both of which are must-tries. The curry crab remains the star, deserving of every accolade and the centerpiece of any meal here.
Service is another feather in Somboon's cap. Attentive, with a genuine smile and politeness that reflects the heart of Thai hospitality, the staff ensures a dining experience that's as pleasant as the food.
And the cherry on top? The affordability. Somboon Seafood proves that good food doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag, making it a favored spot for locals and tourists alike.
In summary, Somboon Seafood stands as a testament to Thai culinary tradition, with a few areas for improvement that hardly dampen the overall delightful dining experience. Whether you're there for the famed curry crab or the fresh cockles, you're in for a treat that's kind on the palate and the wallet....
Read moreThey don’t even deserve one star. Trust me. The service here was the worst ever during our trip for me and my parents. I was here two months ago, it was our last dinner in Bangkok before heading to the airport. We were exhausted when we arrived at the restaurant. It was early dinner time and we were the first customers. Our server came to us and asked for drinks. I said ‘oh I didn’t even open the menu’, but she showed the drinks page and waited the at table and she was looking down on us. I thought she had a tough day or something.
BUT, SHE WASN’T THE ONLY ONE. Some of the servers, who were just standing, talking, and waiting for our empty dishes near by us, were just same as her. Even though we did nothing to make them angry. My parents are nice and have a good manner. We are just a normal family. I started to get irritated about their attitude and checked the next table. Four Chinese ladies were looking at menus excitingly. And a server in front of them were looking down on them again. I didn’t even know why they were so angry. Just whole people in the restaurant seemed looked down on customers. Not only this, but a busser guy (I guess) took our dishes so rudely without asking.
I was gonna talk to the manager or the owner about this, but I didn’t. Because it was our last dinner and I didn’t want to ruin my parents’ feeling. Poor my parents... They didn’t deserve this bad experience in Bangkok!!
I just asked for the bill and left the restaurant with sad feeling. If you don’t wanna experience this kind of situation with just average food, please don’t eat here. There’s nothing special in this restaurant. Check other local restaurant with reasonable cost. This restaurant isn’t worth it. Most of people I had met in Thiland were very polite and nice. I still don’t understand why this restaurant is so popular even though the service...
Read moreThe first time I visited in late afternoon when the restaurant was quiet, and tried the curry live crab with morning glory and steamed rice. It was very good and clearly a fresh crab. The meat was perfect, and there is little to improve in a well prepared live crab. The only improvement I would make is to have less oil and less curry egg? I am not sure if it's eggs that are mixed in the curry suace. Overall, it was a very good crab dish. The morning glory was a nice side dish. The white rice is important as a spoonful every now and then cleanses the palate and prepers the taste buds for another serve of the great crab meat. Service was very good, and had nothing to improve during my visit. It would be useful if the restaurant provided napkins to protect one's clothes when eating the somewhat messy meal, as it's easy to spill some of the sauce on clothes. They do provide several other seafood dishes as per the menus photos, but I didn't try them as yet. The restaurant was quiet during late afternoon, so that is a good time to visit if you don't like crowded places. Overall a very good experience and very good live crabs on my first visit. On my second visit, the experience wasn't as good. Had the chilie crab, but it was smaller than the first visit and the claw didn't have much meat. See photo. It cost the same as the first visit, which was much better. They also refused to serve a glass of water at the end, having spent nearly 2000 Baht. Paid the 7% VAT, but no service charge here, so that’s good. Good value for about 2200 Baht on first visit, but no so on the second visit. Worth a visit for those who appreciate live crabs. 8 Mar and...
