What I liked • just across from my hotel, convenient location, easy to to find. • clean and somewhat orderly • welcoming staff, COVID-19 protocols mostly adhered to (my therapist took of his mask during the massage but that's ok) • didn't have to wait long before I was assigned a therapist and sent to my room

What I didn't like • massage was below average. Therapist wasn't well trained. Random motions, no real technique. Was asked to flipover twice because the therapist didn't budget timing well. • towel used to wipe off massage oil on my body was the same towel for the shower 😳. I didn't shower, of course. • I booked aromatherapy 2hrs. No aromatherapy oil used - just regular massage oil instead. • I stopped the session 45 mins early because it just wasn't up to expectations. Therapist didn't seem interested in doing his job. Very lazy way of doing massage. Repeated random motions were pointless. Didn't want to waste time here any longer. • THB100 minimum tip even if the massage was not good.

Context • I lived in Thailand and Indonesia for several years. I do massage regularly so I have a pretty clear idea of what to expect. It's often a hit and miss with these places. Unfortunately this was a miss for me. Not likely to return.

Be warned that the masseurs in 9-Teen Massage are looking for extra tips from providing "specials" during your massage. And if you refuse the "special", they really lose interest in providing a proper massage.

I was trying to book the nearby Prime massage but since it was full, I looked online for the reviews of the other massage places in the area. 9-Teen had the highest so decided to give it a try. I booked a 2 hour Thai + aromatherapy massage, which cost 1000THB. The place was decorated relatively simply, without a lot of trimmings.

After about 40 minutes into the Thai massage where I was robed, my masseur asked me to remove all the clothes for the oil massage. Soon after, he asked if I wanted the "special". When I said I wasn't interested, you could feel the air in the room change, and after massaging for some time, he said he needed to go out to use the toilet. I was left in the room for about 10 minutes before he came back, without any apologies for leaving me in there so long, and then just proceeded to provide a massage perfunctorily. This didn't last the full 120 minutes I paid for...I think I really got something like 90 minutes. I didn't want to make a fuss since I realized I had a made a mistake coming to the wrong type of massage house so I just left quickly after.

Wow, absolute worst massage I’ve ever received. And I’ve had at least 20 around the world. Still fuming about it.

I can’t comment on availability of masseurs since I was never asked, although I see that others don’t receive their choice. Doesn’t matter to me.

I asked for a 2-hour massage that was cut 15 or more minutes short. Towards the end, the masseur kept badgering me for a tip for special services - to the tune of 3000 baht (the actual total for the massage is 1000 by the way). I felt like I couldn’t say no, I literally even said never mind I’m ok 2-3 times but he pretended not to understand me in English. I eventually gave up and said fine. The massage pressure prior to this was unintuitive: despite my squirming and physically moving about he didn’t understand that it was too strong.

The extra service was terrible. I’ve never seen someone so unenthusiastic and honestly repulsed before. For comparison, at every other massage place I’ve been where this was the ending, 99% of masseurs are eager and try to befriend you regardless of a language barrier. I left feeling very cheated of the tip and did not feel safe to say no in the end as mentioned above.

Avoid this place if you don’t want to feel harassed for an exorbitant tip. Avoid this place if you, like me, take the great reviews as gospel. And finally, avoid this place if you want to not be made to feel completely insignificant...
