During my recent visit to Istanbul, I had the pleasure of experiencing one of the city's finest culinary delights at Meshur Balikci Mehmet Usta in Karakoy. This charming little eatery proved to be an absolute gem, serving up the most popular and scrumptious fish wraps that left me craving for more!

From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was buzzing with energy and a sense of local authenticity. The friendly staff greeted me warmly and made me feel right at home. The star of the show, of course, was the mesmerizing sight of the skilled chefs crafting the mouthwatering fish wraps right in front of me. Witnessing their expertise and dedication to freshness was a true delight.

Now, let's talk about the fish wraps themselves - divine! Bursting with a delightful symphony of flavors, each bite was a delightful fusion of textures and tastes. The fish was impeccably fresh, perfectly seasoned, and grilled to perfection. The warm, soft flatbread embraced the filling, creating a harmonious marriage of tastes that tickled my taste buds in all the right ways. I couldn't resist ordering a second wrap; it was simply that good!

The menu offered a variety of options, all showcasing the freshest catch of the day. Whether you're a seafood enthusiast or a first-timer, there's something here to suit every palate. The staff was more than happy to offer recommendations and answer any questions, making the experience all the more enjoyable.

Apart from the delectable food, the prices were surprisingly reasonable, considering the high quality of the ingredients and the generous portion sizes. It's evident that Meshur Balikci Mehmet Usta takes pride in delivering an authentic, delightful experience to its patrons.

One of the highlights of dining here was the perfect location. Situated in the vibrant neighborhood of Karakoy, the restaurant exudes a charming, local ambiance. The nearby sights and attractions added to the overall appeal, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal while exploring the city.

I cannot recommend Meshur Balikci Mehmet Usta enough to anyone visiting Istanbul. It truly embodies the essence of Turkish cuisine and offers an unforgettable taste of the city's local delicacies. Whether you're a foodie or simply seeking an authentic culinary adventure, this place will not disappoint.

In conclusion, my visit to Meshur Balikci Mehmet Usta was an experience I'll cherish forever. The fish wraps were outstanding, the service was impeccable, and the ambiance was delightful. It's a must-visit destination that should be on every traveler's list when exploring the beautiful city...

I honestly don’t know why this place is so popular. I gave it two tries, and in two different days (lunch time and dinner time) to provide fair and balanced review of this establishment. The “Balik Durum”, which means, “fish wrap” was nothing to write home about when it comes to freshness, cleanliness, and taste. The fish tasted old and bland. Also, the service was substandard. I wasn’t expecting a lot from a street stand, It was not busy when I visited at around 11:30 AM just before the lunch rush, and the staff making the sandwiches, were in unfriendly mood with an attitude toward customers as I witnessed. I believe this place is a tourist trap, overpriced, unclean (the person making the sandwich was not wearing gloves) and no redeeming qualities to overcome other shortcomings (like no place to sit and enjoy your wrap, and the area around the stand is extremely dirty). However, other restaurants around that same area, even next door to this stand were very clean. There are a couple of places like this one around the same street that I am going to try since I saw locals sitting and eating the fish wrap and no line to order the sandwich, which means it must be good. I will give one of those restaurants a try and review it in the near future. I just need to get this unpleasant experience at this particular stand out of my mind for now.

I really wanted to love this place based on the reviews, but I would NOT recommend...

This spot nails the balık ekmek experience: simple, fast, and delicious.

Food (5/5): I went for the fish bread and it hit the mark perfectly. Generous portions, loads of flavour and the mackerel gave it that rich, satisfying taste without being too heavy. Everything felt fresh and well-balanced, one of those meals where every bite keeps you going back in.

Service (4/5): It was busy (Friday night rush) but the crew were working like a well-oiled machine to keep orders flying out. No frills, just efficient and hardworking. Exactly what you’d expect from a street-food-style setup.

Atmosphere (4/5): Bustling and energetic, typical of the area and part of the fun. You’re not here for a quiet sit-down; you’re here for the buzz and a tasty wrap in hand.

Value (5/5): This is where it shines. At 200 lira (about $8 AUD), it’s fantastic value. Tasty, filling and easy on the wallet… hard to beat.

Overall: A proper Istanbul food experience. Busy, flavour-packed and excellent value. If you’re chasing an authentic balık ekmek at a fair price, this is the place.

Rating: 5/5 ⭐️ Highly recommend, worth weaving through...

We saw the long queues every day so many times that we were curious to try here. Our expectations were not high as we noticed it was only foreigners in the large queue. Basically, it's just a grilled small portion of thin mackeral in bread with lettuce and lots of spices. Quite tasteless we all agreed and very oily. Hard to even taste the fish over all the spices. Not worth the wait at all sadly :( All 3 of us did not finish the wrap and went elsewhere to eat. For us, this is just a tourist trap. Later, we were told by many Turkish locals that they avoid this place and always laugh when passing cause it is only tourists who flock here. BUT please do have a walk around KARAKOY. Has a great vibe. It is a very touristic area so be wary that many restaurants are quite pricey and the food is ordinary. Standard for any touristic areas in a metropolis I guess. BEHIND this main street there are some really good cafes with great coffee and a cosy vibe sitting in the back streets. Perfect to chill or work in. So walk around here and get lost. You will find some cool places 👍🏻
