I have been to the Hunger in Fişekhane many times and have always enjoyed the food and the impeccable service. The restaurant is pricey for Istanbul but always exceeds expectations. I stumbled across this branch while searching for somewhere to get dessert with my family on Istiklal Street at around 11pm. The server at the front greeted us politely and recommended we eat at the terrace leading the way. Once we got to the terrace to servers told us that the kitchen was closing and we should leave, we mentioned we only wanted dessert and they reluctantly sat us down, saying that we would have to order and eat quickly and pay before receiving the food. This was okay with us! If there was an issue we should have been told to turn away and everything would have been okay. So we sat down and gave our order with the servers the whole time acting like we were an inconvenience to them. The server then put three bottles of water we didn’t order on the table and gave us the bill. We paid, and upon checking the receipt saw that we had been charged for these unknowingly! We then received the food after a long wait. Since the restaurant was closing asked for takeout boxes for leftovers, searching for the servers, and were told they had none, again with no sort of emotion, before leaving. This whole experience left a sour taste in my mouth. The service was so poor compared to the other branch and it felt that there was no care for us. If serving us was such an inconvenience at night we should have been told and we would have gone elsewhere. But to treat customers like this an hour before closing when we are spending good money on food is not good. To be completely honest no disrespect to the chefs, the food was amazing as usual and the desserts were great. Just the service was awful by the...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this restaurant while wandering the neighborhood near our hotel. It is set inside a little square with other restaurants and coffee shops right off the main shopping strip.
There is outdoor seating on the ground floor but they also have a couple balcony tables on the second floor. Perfect for us in order to eat outside but to avoid the cigarette smoke that is common all over Europe. If you sit on the little balcony you can look out on the little square below, nice for people watching.
The restaurant has a hip/chic vibe with the decorations and an international flair.
The menu is extensive and only accessible by QR code so you will need a phone with service or to connect to the WiFi. The menu offers everything from snacks to pizzas to Korean food and burgers to a small Vegan selection.
There is definitely something for everyone on the menu. Our table had the Exotic lemonade, a mojito, a chai tea latte (make sure you tell them no coffee, we learned the hard way they add coffee to the chai latte), 2 bottles of water, chicken in curry sauce, spicy fries, the vegan pizza, and a fajita pizza.
The service was relatively quick and our server did his best despite a language barrier. Google translate was helpful as well as simply pointing at things on the menu.
We found all food had good flavor and appeared to be made from high quality ingredients. Without tip our meal was $67 which felt very reasonable for the amount of food we received.
We would definitely...
Read moreAccidentally ventured into this place, as everything else was full.
Food: I had Mediterranean Salad (380₺) and Penne Arrabiatta (311₺).
The salad was 5/10; the greens weren’t fresh, the tomatos (there was only one, cut into 4 pieces) felt plasticky, and the dressing was nonexistent (a shame, since the salad really needed something that would make the ingredients work together).
Pasta was slightly better, maybe 6/10. The sauce was great (and spicy!) and the cheese was present. Though it was obvious that the pasta wasn’t fresh, it was reheated.
The portions were big (I’m talking American size big), which would’ve been perfect had the food been great.
Atmosphere: There are 3? 4? floors and a ton of sitting options available. My friend and I dined on the rooftop, and the view was great.
Overall, The Hunger is not a bad place, but Istanbul has so many other great cafes and...
