The steaks are always of great quality. The vegetables that accompany them with the chips and delicious also. The staff are great and nothing is too much trouble. Lovely little restaurant in the heart of Barnsley and there is a nice little pub next door to sample some real ale before/after the meal.Only negative - the prices do seem excessive, however, saying that, the food is delicious so I can't complain too much and as I'm no expert in meat prices, I can't really compare.
Update - 17/12/12
I felt that I had to update this review, after being back to Grille twice since the recent refurbishment in May. I went for my birthday in June, and once again in October and left quite disappointed.
The service was fantastic, so that can't be knocked, but my main criticism was my steak (the primary reason for going there). Twice I asked for my steak medium-rare, and twice it came out well done. Now, for a steak house that prides itself on serving up good quality steaks (at premium prices) this is for me, unforgivable. Ok, a one off isn't so bad - but not twice. This left me both times, waiting around for five minutes whilst my friends tucked into their meals. To their credit, the service staff were very apologetic and quick in getting my replacement steak to me, but I must say, the replacement steaks weren't anywhere near the quality that I expect of Grille, and in my eyes, they have gone downhill slightly over the last 12 months.
In the past, I would look forward to going to Grille for a beautiful steak with vigor - now, not so much and I can't see myself going back for quite a while. Not when you're paying £20 for steak and getting what I know is not the best quality it can...
Read moreResturant decor is a bit dark and dinghy could do with a revamp to become more modern. Kitchen very open so kitchen staff are visible. Although, that also means that they sometimes watch you which feels a bit awkward. Waitress we had was, to be honest, quite full of herself. Very outspoken to colleagues about customers, not very discreet as we could overhear! The only thing good about the food was the meat itself. You expect a steakhouse to cook good steak and they did. But...they couldn't cook anything else very well, which was quite disappointing. The steaks come with chips, onion rings, veg and peppercorn/Diane sauce as standard apparently, although that's not on the menu so you have to ask if you haven't been before. The chips were huge which meant they went cold fast. Not sure if they were frozen but they weren't fresh tasting. Onion rings were like cardboard, mostly just batter. Side of veg was just a bit odd, consisted of Brocolli, Cauliflower, Mushrooms, Onions and Potatoes? Just an odd side dish if you ask me. I'm all for a nice health side with steak but I've never seen this pairing and to be honest, it just wasn't nice (again didn't taste fresh). All in all, I wouldn't visit again. Some improvements need to be made mainly on the food side, but also on the atmosphere...
Read moreI have dined here countless times in the past 15 years and have generally been happy with the food and service. Unfortunately, in recent months the owners appear to have cut more corners than Lewis Hamilton and now risk losing loyal customers to the likes of Market Kitchen and The Salt House. My latest (and probably last) visit was as a member of a group of 16 on a weekday night. The service was slow as there only appeared to be one chef cooking for the entire restaurant so I waited approximately 30-40 minutes from finishing my starter to receiving my main course. The £11.99 Grille Burger eventually arrived looking like a £4.99 offering from Wetherspoons. The two puny burgers inside the dry bread had no flavour whatsoever, the salad looked old and the chips undercooked. There was no sign of the two "businessmen" who own the place, who are usually seen hassling their overworked serving staff while walking around with their hands behind their backs. I am sure they are still stealing a living while masquerading as restaurateurs. Very disappointed with the quality of food our group received and the time it took...
