I was dining alone in between an 8 mile walk on moors nearby and a music event at Victoria Hall across the road from 'Don't Tell Titus'. I was there between 5 and 7pm on a Sunday. I opted for a restaurant meal but the bar menu also appealed so was seated upstairs. Sally, the attentive, bright and conversational waitress explained about recent menu changes which are presented as two sets of 3 courses but with interchange possible between the two lists ... unnecessary confusion, I thought, as a straightforward al à carte would present the interesting and unusual dishes as less like takeaway set meal options which is rather out of place in this well appointed establishment. The feature most worthy of comment, however, is the option of up to 10 'small plates' of varying dishes including prawns, ostrich, venison and clams. An opportunity here to sample something unusual. Tapas is the obvious comparison. The food is completely different but the sampling style excellent for a small group of diners, a family or a social group sharing their views on a variety of tastes, textures and presentations. Its what I went for and wasn't disappointed. It must be extra work for Raj in the kitchen and certainly also for Sally keeping the tables supplied with all those dishes. For me it worked and added up to an ample and reasonably priced meal. Only 9 of the 10 small plates were available so I negotiated a cut priced dessert of chocolate gnocchi ... another dining adventure. Together with a couple of pints of the excellent Saltaire Blonde I spent under £35. 'Don't Tell Titus' ... he was a bit of a stuffed shirt by all accounts! Best tell all your friends or better still get them along to a gem of...
Read moreI used to love this place when visiting family in Yorkshire & had many lovely meals here in the past. Unfortunately the new ‘host’ door guy they have introduced has on two separate occasions been rude to our family & we won’t bother trying to eat here again. My sister had told me that the last time she tried to eat here, the French guy at the door was abrupt, rude and dismissive when she politely asked if there might be a chance of a table. On this visit, I opened the door to the same man & a pretty empty room. I could see only two reservations written in his book. I asked if a table was available for 3 adults and 3 children. He asked if we had a reservation and I said no. He then started to look us up and down and asked if we were eating. I said yes told him we’d only be around an hour as I had a train to catch. He said ‘no then, sorry, the food is cooked fresh so that won’t work for me’! I asked him to explain and he repeated that the food takes 25 minutes to cook, so we wouldn’t ne served within an hour and again, ‘so that won’t work for me’. I’m unsurprised the place was quiet on an otherwise packed bank holiday Monday. Just to mention, I’ve eaten here a couple of times on the way to catch a train and eating within an hour has never been an issue. I’m embarrassed on behalf of the poor staff behind him, gathered in a group behind the empty bar. I’d advise the owners to look for new staff if they hope to remain in business...
Read moreWent earlyish on a very quiet Sunday evening.
This is the first time we have been for a few years and it was rather disappointing. The food is now mainly tapas style and we were greeted with an extensive list of items that were not available including steak and camembert.
We chose a tapas dish as a starter and a main each .
Liver tikka one of my favourites at other places was served in a cold dish on bread and tiny chopped vegetables. The bread had been very highly salted, actually too much for the 'average palate'. The liver was on the verge of overcooked, but OK although not hot. The 'mustard-looking' sauce was sprinkled over the lot. It was pleasant but at the end left a very salty taste in the mouth. Just as well we'd ordered water!
We both had the house burger for our main. Served on a hot dish, the bun had not been toasted and was rather squashy. The burger apoeated home made but was rather overcooked and chewy. The red cabbage slaw was really nice. Sadly the home made chips were poor, they had clearly been cooked earlier and then reheated. Whilst I appreciate the effort of not having 'bulk prepared' frozen chips these were left tepid, soft and very, very oily.
Overall the value was reasonable, but the quality was not outstanding, and I suggest less salt is used in the kitchen, let the diners choose how...
